Using Meshk: From Theory to Practice
Every article on this site eventually points the same direction: go listen to this. A neutral third is easy enough to describe in commas and hard to actually hear until something plays it back on demand, at whatever tempo you want, as many times as it takes. That's what meshk.app is for. Betweenfrets.com is the reading; Meshk is the listening and the doing. This is a quick, honest tour of what it does, what it doesn't, and how to get the most out of it if you've been working through the makam and dastgah articles here.
What Meshk actually does
Practice Meshk is a free, browser-based practice app built around one idea: an interactive fretless neck that shows exactly where a pitch falls, instead of snapping everything to the nearest key the way a piano-style interface would. Pick a tuning, pick a makam or dastgah, and the neck lights up with every scale degree — including the ones that land between the fixed semitone positions, which is most of what this site's tuning-systems and turkish-makam sections are actually about. Click a dot and a physically-modeled string plucks it back at you. No account, no install — it works the same on a phone as a laptop.
Pick an instrument, then three clicks to sound
Practice Meshk currently plays three instruments — cümbüş, oud, and setar — open any of them directly at meshk.app/instrument/cumbus, /instrument/oud, or /instrument/setar. Cümbüş and oud share a fretless, six-course layout and the Turkish makam catalog; pick the setar instead and the app follows you there — different tunings, and the mode picker relabels itself from Makam to Dastgah and swaps in the Persian catalog. Choosing the instrument is the whole toggle; there's no separate settings screen to go hunting through.
From there, getting sound out of it really is three clicks:
- Click a tuning chip to set the strings.
- Pick a makam (or dastgah) from the picker.
- Click any dot on the neck, or press "Play."
Meshk's own quick-start page covers this in about a paragraph, because that's genuinely all there is to the basic loop.
What you can practice
Practice The mode picker is where the actual studying happens. On cümbüş or oud, it's 24 makams split into two tiers — a "Common (12-TET)" group playable on any piano or guitar, and a "Microtonal" group that isn't, Rast and Uşşak both filed under the second one, for exactly the neutral-interval reasons Çeşni and Ajnas walks through. Switch to setar and the same panel becomes seven primary dastgahs — Shur among them — plus five avaz satellite modes: together, the twelve modal systems of Persian classical music.
Tunings get the same range: fifteen presets across four families, from oud/cümbüş layouts built around a bam-plus-fourths pattern to the setar's five dastgah-specific configurations (its default tuning is labeled, right on the chip, "Do-Sol-Do-Do (Shur)"). Reading the koma markers
Established The detail that makes Meshk worth using, not just reading about, is the koma marker: any scale degree that doesn't land on a fixed semitone position gets its own dashed, unfilled marker positioned exactly where the pitch falls, labeled with its written perde name. Holdrian Commas and 53-TET is the article for what a comma actually is — 1/53 of an octave, about 22.6 cents — and once that number means something, watching a marker sit visibly between two semitone dots stops being an abstraction and starts being a place on a neck. Practice The five interval sizes Çeşni and Ajnas names — bakiye, küçük mücenneb, büyük mücenneb, tanini, artık ikili — are the actual gaps between dots on the neck. Clicking back and forth across one is a faster way to learn what an 8-comma step sounds like than any amount of reading comma counts on a page.
Sound design and pattern playback, briefly
Practice Every pluck comes from a physically-modeled (Karplus-Strong) string. A sound panel offers five knobs — brightness, sustain, body, shimmer, pluck character — plus an advanced drawer of raw synthesis parameters, saveable as presets, if you want to shape the timbre. Uncertain Exactly how close that gets to a specific real cümbüş or setar in your hands isn't something I can quantify; it's convincing enough on a decent pair of headphones, which is the bar that actually matters for ear training.
More useful for practice is the playback side: "Play the makam" runs an authored, seyir-shaped phrase where Meshk has one, or a plain scale run where it doesn't, with a tempo slider (40–200 BPM) and a loop toggle. Practice tips that actually help
A few things that work, from using this alongside the theory rather than instead of it:
- Ear training over scale-running. For a mode with a neutral degree, sustain the karar (or shahed) as a drone and hunt for the target pitch by ear before checking where the marker actually sits.
- Compare intervals, don't just count them. Click two adjacent dots repeatedly to hold an 8-comma step in your ear next to a 9-comma one — the comma table in Çeşni and Ajnas gives you the sizes; your ear has to do the rest.
- Loop the seyir, then turn it off. Play a makam's built-in phrase a few times to internalize its shape, then try tracing the same path yourself, checking the karar/güçlü/yeden panel if you lose the thread.
- Read, then practice, then read again. The theory sharpens what you're listening for. Hearing it sharpens what the theory meant.
What Meshk isn't
Practice Worth being upfront about: Meshk plays three instruments — cümbüş, oud, and setar — while this site's own instrument catalog already runs to nine, including tanbur, tar, bağlama, kemençe, ney, and santur. Most of what you read here about those has no matching interactive neck yet. Meshk is also a synthesis engine and a study aid, not a substitute for a real instrument in a real room or a teacher correcting your hand — treat its pitch as a reliable reference, not the only correct performance of a makam. And the catalog, however carefully sourced, is a curated slice of a living oral tradition — exactly why both sites tag claims with confidence markers instead of presenting everything as settled.
Read here, practice there
That division of labor is the whole design: betweenfrets.com is where a makam's history, construction, and theory get room to be explained properly; meshk.app is where you put a finger, or a click, on the actual pitch.
