Persian Dastgah

Shur: The Foundational Dastgah

Shur is the most fundamental and most frequently performed of the seven primary Persian dastgahs. Its name means "passion" or "ardor" in Persian. If a student of Persian classical music learns only one dastgah, it will be Shur — and much of the radif (canonical repertoire) revolves around it.

What is a dastgah?

Established Before examining Shur specifically, it helps to understand what a dastgah is. A dastgah is not simply a scale or mode. It is a large modal framework that contains within it multiple melodic models (gusheh), a prescribed order of modulation between them, characteristic phrases, and a body of composed and semi-improvised music (the radif). A performance in a dastgah is a journey through its constituent gusheh, following a path from the opening (daraamad) through various modal areas, with periodic descents (forud) back to the home pitch.

Established The seven primary dastgahs are: Shur, Mahur, Homayun, Segah, Chahargah, Nava, and Rast-Panjgah. In addition, five satellite modes called avaz are derived from Shur and other parent dastgahs. The avaz modes derived from Shur are: Abu Ata, Bayat-e Tork, Afshari, and Dashti.

Scale structure

Established Farhat describes the basic scale of Shur (on the finalis D) as approximately:

Established The most characteristic interval in Shur is the neutral second between the first and second degrees — roughly 135 cents in Farhat's analysis, notated with the koron accidental (a microtonal flat, approximately a quarter-tone). This interval is neither a Western half step nor a whole step; it sits between them, and it gives Shur its immediately recognizable plaintive quality.

Practice Farhat deliberately provides interval measurements in cents rather than committing to any fixed temperament grid. This reflects a core principle of Persian music theory: intervals are flexible, not fixed. The performer adjusts intonation based on musical context, emotional expression, and the specific gusheh being performed.

Functional pitches

Established Persian dastgah theory identifies several functional pitch roles, analogous to but distinct from the Turkish system:

  • Finalis (ist): D — the pitch on which the dastgah rests and concludes. Analogous to the Turkish karar, but in Persian theory the concept carries somewhat different weight.
  • Shahed ("witness"): A — the pitch of primary melodic emphasis, the tone around which much of the melodic activity revolves. The shahed is not necessarily the finalis; in Shur, it sits a fifth above.
  • Forud: the cadential descent — a characteristic melodic formula that signals a return to the finalis. In Shur, the forud pattern typically descends stepwise through the lower tetrachord to D.

Attested The distinction between shahed and finalis is one of the features that sets Persian dastgah theory apart from Turkish makam theory. In Turkish practice, the karar (resting tone) is generally also the tone of primary emphasis. In Shur, the shahed (A) receives more melodic attention than the finalis (D) through much of a performance — the finalis is where you arrive, but the shahed is where you dwell.

Moteghayyer: the mutable pitches

Established One of the most distinctive features of Persian dastgah theory is the concept of moteghayyer — mutable pitches that change their intonation depending on the melodic direction or the gusheh being performed. This has no direct equivalent in Turkish makam theory, where pitches (perdeler) are conceived as fixed positions.

Established In Shur, the second degree (E koron) is the primary moteghayyer pitch. Farhat documents that this pitch may be raised when the melody is ascending (moving toward a more "natural" E) and lowered when descending. The exact degree of mutation depends on the gusheh, the register, and the performer's judgment. This is not ornamentation — it is a structural feature of the mode.

Practice For a student coming from Western or Turkish training, the concept of moteghayyer requires a fundamental shift in thinking. The "same note" is not always the same pitch. Learning Shur means learning to hear and produce these contextual pitch shifts as a natural part of the mode's character, not as deviations from a fixed scale.

Shur and the radif

Established The radif is the canonical body of melodic models that defines Persian classical music. Several versions of the radif exist, compiled by master musicians (among the most influential: those of Mirza Abdollah, transcribed by Moussa Maʿrufi, and of Abolhasan Saba). Shur's section within the radif is the largest and most elaborate, reflecting its central position in the tradition.

Attested A performance in Shur typically begins with the daraamad (introductory section), which establishes the mode and its characteristic mood. The performer then moves through a selection of gusheh — some exploring the lower register, others ascending to higher modal areas — before returning via forud to the finalis. The order is not entirely fixed, but there is a conventional trajectory that musicians learn through years of study with a master (the meşk tradition — from which meshk.app takes its name).

Shur's satellite modes (avaz)

Established Four avaz modes are derived from Shur: Abu Ata, Bayat-e Tork, Afshari, and Dashti. Each shares Shur's basic pitch material but emphasizes different registers and gusheh, creating distinct modal characters. These avaz are often performed as extensions or digressions within a Shur performance, before a final forud back to the home pitch of Shur itself.

Attested The relationship between a dastgah and its avaz modes is one of the structural features that distinguishes the Persian system from the Turkish. Where Turkish theory treats each makam as relatively independent (despite noting "family" relationships), Persian theory explicitly organizes modes into parent-child hierarchies through the dastgah-avaz relationship.
