Çeşni and Ajnas: The Building Blocks of Makam
Turkish makam theory does not start from scales. It starts from smaller melodic units that combine into whatever scale a given makam happens to have. Turkish theory calls these units çeşni ("flavor"); Arabic theory calls the same concept ajnas (singular jins, "genus" or "type"). Learn the units and the scales fall out for free; memorize only the scales, makam by makam, and you have memorized disconnected facts with no way to predict the next one.
What çeşni are
Established A çeşni is a short melodic segment — three, four, or five notes — with a fixed interval pattern and often its own distinct melodic character. Turkish theory names them by size:
- üçlü — trichord (3 notes, 2 intervals)
- dörtlü — tetrachord (4 notes, 3 intervals), spanning a perfect fourth
- beşli — pentachord (5 notes, 4 intervals), spanning a perfect fifth
Established A perfect fourth equals 22 Holdrian commas and a perfect fifth equals 31 in the Arel-Ezgi-Uzdilek system, so every dörtlü's intervals must sum to exactly 22 commas, and every beşli's to exactly 31 — a hard invariant worth checking against any source. The core çeşni catalog
Established Six dörtlü, built from these five intervals, generate most of the standard makam repertoire:

*Neutral pitch — closer to a quarter-tone flat of the letter shown than to the letter itself. The comma figure in the Pattern column is the precise value; the letter name is only a rough approximation.
Established Çargah, Buselik, Kurdi, and Hicaz reduce to intervals a 12-TET instrument can approximate, which is part of why makams built from them travel reasonably well onto piano or guitar. Rast and Uşşak do not: both contain the 8-comma büyük mücenneb (≈181 cents), sitting between a Western minor and major second with no fretted equivalent. Playing them correctly requires a fretless instrument, or a fretted one adapted for the purpose.
Established Each dörtlü has a companion beşli, usually built by appending a tanini (9 commas) on top — Rast beşli is T K S T (9+8+5+9), Buselik beşli is T B T T, and so on. Two exceptions have their own shapes: Hüseyni beşli (S K T T) and Nikriz beşli (T S A S).
How çeşni combine into a makam
Established A makam joins a lower çeşni sitting on the karar (tonic) to an upper çeşni that begins where the lower one ends — its 5th degree if the lower unit is a beşli, its 4th if a dörtlü. The join defines the makam; the resulting scale is just whatever pitches that join happens to produce.

Established Rast joins a pentachord to a tetrachord. Concatenating their intervals — beşli 9-8-5-9, then dörtlü 9-8-5 — gives 9-8-5-9-9-8-5, exactly the ascending scale given in the Rast article. Uşşak runs the same principle in the other order, tetrachord to pentachord: dörtlü 5-8-9, then beşli 9-4-9-9, giving 5-8-9-9-4-9-9. Both sequences sum to 53 commas — a full octave, as they must.
The Hicaz family: one çeşni, four makams
Established The clearest demonstration of why çeşni matter more than scales is the set of makams built on a Hicaz lower unit:

Established All four share the same augmented-second lower çeşni; nothing else about them is interchangeable. Outside the tradition, all four routinely get flattened into "the Hicaz scale." Inside it, they are four distinct pieces of music — a player who has drilled the Hicaz çeşni itself, rather than four separate scale shapes, can move between all four by changing only the upper unit, and can actually hear what distinguishes them.
Ajnas: the Arabic parallel
Established Arabic theory names the same building-block concept jins (pl. ajnas). The concept is shared with Turkish çeşni; the specific inventories, names, and — critically — the tuning are not identical. Ajam, Nahawand, Kurd, Rast, Bayati, and Hijaz are the closest Arabic counterparts to Çargah, Buselik, Kurdi, Rast, Uşşak, and Hicaz respectively.
Practice Comparing the two systems by cent value is a common error. Arabic notation places ajnas on a 24-tone quarter-tone grid, but that grid is a notational convenience, not a description of performance — actual intonation varies by region and performer. Turkish Rast's neutral third sits around 385 cents (17 commas); Arabic Rast's third is notated at roughly 350 cents and performed variously. Treating "Rast" as one pitch set shared identically across both traditions is exactly the flattening this site's Holdrian Commas and 53-TET coverage warns against.
Attested Building modes from small, named melodic segments rather than treating them as fixed scales is not unique to the Turkish-Arabic sphere. Harold Powers' comparative survey of "mode" situates this construction principle within a broader cross-cultural pattern, and both the Turkish and Arabic versions of it descend from the same medieval theoretical lineage — al-Farabi, Safi al-Din al-Urmawi — discussed in more depth in Makam and Dastgah.
Why this matters
Practice The payoff is direct. A student who drills the core dörtlü and beşli in several keys has a transferable skill that generates dozens of makams; a student who memorizes scales one makam at a time has memorized dozens of unrelated facts, with no way to predict the next one. Every makam article on this site names its çeşni construction explicitly for this reason: the çeşni is the fact worth remembering, and the scale is always re-derivable from it.
