Tuning the Oud and Cümbüş: Families, Not a Standard
"How is an oud tuned?" sounds like it should have one textbook answer. It doesn't. A Turkish reference work, a mobile tuner app, and a working player will each give you an internally consistent, well-sourced, mutually incompatible reply — an accurate picture of how these instruments are tuned across two traditions and a repertoire that keeps changing its drone note. This guide covers the real families in circulation, how to tune a course by ear, and where open strings hand off to comma-level makam intonation.
Turkish and Arabic oud tuning
Attested The classical Turkish oud tuning is named by solfège,
Fa♯–Si–Mi–La–Re–Sol, corresponding to F♯2 B2 E3 A3 D4 G4 low to high —
every interval a perfect fourth. Established The common modern Arabic
tuning, arap düzeni, is lower and warmer: C2 F2 A2 D3 G3 C4, with one
exception to the all-fourths pattern — the interval between the second and
third courses is a major third, not a fourth. Attested Named regional
variants exist too: the tuning associated with the Egyptian composer and
oud virtuoso Farid el-Atrache, D2 G2 A2 D3 G3 C4, keeps a D bam under a

The cümbüş: the oud's tuning, moved up a fourth
Attested The cümbüş borrows the oud's tuning wholesale and shifts it
up a fourth, which is why a player who already knows the oud can sit down
at a cümbüş with no new left-hand vocabulary to learn. "Cümbüş standart" —
what Turkish reference works actually give for the instrument, named
Do–Sol–Re–La–Mi–Si from the thinnest string down — is B2 E3 A3 D4 G4 C5:
the Turkish oud tuning above, transposed up a perfect fourth, course for
course.
Attested That isn't the only cümbüş tuning in circulation. Tuner
apps for Turkish saz, ud, and tanbur players typically ship two presets
instead — a low "Pes" (E2 F♯2 B2 E3 A3 D4) and a high "Tiz"
(A2 B2 E3 A3 D4 G4, an oud tuning with the bam moved to A) — both
oud-family layouts, not the all-fourths "standart." Neither is wrong; they
document a different, equally real convention.
Uncertain The single most widely circulated "standard cümbüş tuning"
online, E2 A2 B2 E3 A3 D4, could not be traced to a primary source in the
research behind this article. It's internally coherent — an oud-family
layout with a low E added — and plenty of players use it, but its
popularity is a lesson in how a claim hardens into fact through
repetition, not verification. Treat it as common practice, not an attested
standard.

Courses, doubling, and the bam
Established Every course on the cümbüş is doubled, and each pair is tuned in unison rather than the octave-paired doubling on a 12-string guitar — twelve strings total across six courses. A mistuned unison pair doesn't shimmer, it beats: a periodic wobble you can hear and feel. That beating is the tuning method — bring the two strings of a course together until it stops.
Established The Turkish oud typically keeps its bam as a single string beneath five doubled courses (11 strings total); some modern builds double the bam too, for 12. Practice Whichever configuration you're holding, the bam is the course players expect to retune routinely — not to a fixed pitch, but to the karar (tonic) of whatever's being played: a D-karar makam gets a D bam, a piece returning to A gets an A bam. That's scordatura, not a mistake.
Tuning it: reference pitch, then fourths, then beating
Practice In practice, tuning either instrument is a three-step process, not a single measurement:
- Set one reference pitch. Pick a course — usually the bam, or the karar of the piece you're about to play — and match it to a tuner, a drone, or another fixed instrument.
- Tune the rest by interval. Most of the families above are built from perfect fourths, so you can tune each open course against its neighbor by ear: stop the lower course at the pitch of the next open course and adjust until the fourth locks in, the same relative technique guitarists use across adjacent strings.
- Eliminate the beating inside each course. Bring the two strings of every pair together until the wobble disappears. This step does more for the instrument's actual sound than perfect absolute pitch does.
Practice Because both instruments are fretless, internal consistency matters more than hitting an exact absolute pitch. Uncertain Across every tuning above, the pitch classes are the well-attested part; the specific octaves are the weakest, most-inferred layer — they shift with scale length, string gauge, and how hard a skin head can be pushed, not with any fixed standard. Many players tune the whole instrument down a semitone or whole tone for comfort and transpose everything else to match. The relationships between courses carry the music, not their distance from a piano's A440.
From open strings to comma theory
Established This is where practical tuning hands off to Holdrian comma theory. The 53-comma AEU framework describes how far apart pitches sit relative to each other inside a tetrachord or pentachord — it says nothing about which absolute pitch to start from. Your tuned-up open courses supply exactly that: a small number of fixed anchor pitches against which every fretless in-between pitch is found by relative judgment, not measurement.
Attested The choice of tuning family is therefore practical, not just historical. A Bam Re cümbüş drones on D under a D-karar makam like Hicaz on dügâh; a Bam Mi instrument drones on E instead. Practical notes for beginners
- Don't look for the one correct tuning. None of the families above is wrong; match yours to the tradition and repertoire you're studying, the same logic behind picking a Turkish vs. Arabic method book.
- Start from a reference tone, not from memory. A tuner, a drone, or Meshk's own reference pitch all work — the point is having something fixed to check against.
- Learn to hear beating before you trust a tuner app. It's the actual mechanism behind every course you tune, and no app substitutes for that specific kind of listening.
- Expect to retune more than you would a fretted instrument. Fretless intonation drifts, skin heads move with the weather, and the bam is supposed to change with the piece.
