Fretless Technique for Modal Music
A piano gives you the pitches. A guitar gives you the frets. A fretless instrument gives you a blank neck and the expectation that you will find every pitch yourself, every time, with nothing but your ear and your fingers. That is the point. The microtonal intervals at the heart of makam and dastgah music — the neutral thirds, the flexible seconds, the pitches that live between the semitones of Western tuning — cannot be played on an instrument that decides the pitches for you. The fretless neck is not a limitation. It is the instrument meeting the music on its own terms.
Why fretless
Established Both Turkish makam and Persian dastgah systems use intervals that fall outside the Western twelve-note chromatic scale. Turkish theory divides the octave into 53 Holdrian commas; Persian practice uses flexible intervals that Hormoz Farhat argued are not rigid but context-dependent, shifting with the demands of each gusheh and the individual performer's interpretation. A fretted instrument locks you into whatever positions the frets define. A fretless neck lets you place a pitch exactly where the mode requires it — and, critically, lets you adjust that placement in real time as the melodic context changes.
Attested Even the tanbur, which does have frets, uses moveable gut or nylon ties rather than fixed metal bars. Hans De Zeeuw notes that the number of frets on an Ottoman tanbur and the way they are tuned "is still debated in musical treatises," and that in practice, pitch intervals "have a certain flexibility depending on the performer and Ottoman tanbûr maker." The frets guide; they do not dictate.
Left hand fundamentals
Practice The core principles are shared across the oud, setar, and other fretless or semi-fretless instruments in these traditions, even though each instrument's string spacing, scale length, and playing position differ in the specifics.
- Thumb position. The thumb sits behind the neck, roughly opposite the middle finger, providing a stable pivot without squeezing. Excessive thumb pressure creates tension that slows finger movement and degrades intonation.
- Fingertips, not pads. Press the string with the tip of the finger, just behind where a fret would be if one existed. Using the pad flattens the contact area and makes precise placement harder.
- Curved, relaxed fingers. A natural arch in the fingers lets each one drop straight down onto the string. Flat or collapsed fingers pull neighboring pitches out of position.
- Stay close to the neck. Keep fingers that are not actively pressing a string hovering just above the fingerboard. Lifting fingers high wastes time on the return and introduces intonation errors from inconsistent landing angles.

Finding microtonal positions
Practice On a fretless neck, every pitch is a matter of distance: the finger's position along the string determines the vibrating length and therefore the frequency. There is no mechanical stop. The two systems that guide you are position memory (your hand learns where a pitch lives physically on the neck) and interval hearing (your ear recognizes the sound of a correct interval relative to a reference pitch). Neither is sufficient alone.
Position memory is what lets an experienced player land on a note quickly — the hand has been there thousands of times and knows the shape. But position memory is fragile: it depends on consistent instrument setup, string gauge, and even temperature. A new set of strings or a different oud shifts every position slightly.
Interval hearing is what corrects for those shifts. If you can hear that a specific interval — a 5-comma neutral second, for instance — sounds right or wrong relative to the previous pitch or to a drone, you can adjust in real time. This is why ear training is not a separate activity from instrument practice in these traditions. They are the same activity.
Coming from fretted or Western instruments
Practice Players arriving from guitar, piano, or other fixed-pitch instruments typically face a few specific challenges:
- Pitch responsibility. On a guitar, placing your finger anywhere within a fret's zone produces the correct pitch. On a fretless neck, one millimeter of drift is audible. The instrument will not fix your intonation for you.
- Interval expectations. Western training builds strong expectations for semitones and whole tones. The neutral intervals in makam and dastgah — intervals of roughly 6, 7, or 8 commas where Western music has only 4-comma semitones and 9-comma whole tones — feel "wrong" at first. They are not wrong. Your ear has not learned them yet.
- Vibrato habits. Western string vibrato typically oscillates evenly around the target pitch. In Turkish and Arabic oud playing, ornamental pitch inflection follows the direction of the seyir and the character of the makam, not a symmetrical wobble.
Practice approaches
Practice The following methods come from the pedagogical traditions of oud and tanbur teaching, reinforced by broader fretless instrument pedagogy:
- Slow scale work with a drone. Play the ascending and descending scale of a single makam or dastgah over a sustained tonic drone. Go slowly enough that you can hear each interval lock into place against the reference pitch. Speed is irrelevant at this stage — accuracy is everything.
- Sing, then play. Sing a pitch before you finger it. If your voice can produce the interval, your ear knows where it should be, and your finger has a target. If you cannot sing it, you cannot reliably play it. The voice is the most natural microtonal instrument; in Persian classical music, the human voice has historically served as the primary pitch reference.
- Learn from recordings. Listen to master performers repeatedly until melodic phrases become familiar enough that you can hear them internally — what music educators call "audiation." Then try to reproduce what you hear. This is how the oral tradition has always worked.
- Open-string checks. Use open strings as reference points. When a fingered note forms a pure fourth, fifth, or octave against an open string, the instrument resonates noticeably — sympathetic vibration confirms the intonation. Build outward from these anchor points.
- Repeat correctly, many times. Muscle memory forms through accurate repetition. Practicing a passage with wrong intonation reinforces wrong positions. If a pitch is not right, stop, correct, and repeat the correct version before continuing.

Theory and practice: comma positions and finger placement
Established The 53-comma system described in Holdrian Commas and 53-TET assigns each perde a precise numerical position. Segah, for example, sits at 22 commas above Rast — roughly 5 commas above where a Western E-flat would fall. This theoretical precision is essential for notation, analysis, and communication between musicians.
Practice In actual performance, though, these comma positions are targets, not rails. A player performing makam Ushshak may shade the third degree slightly depending on the phrase, the register, or the aesthetic moment. Farhat documented the same phenomenon in Persian music: the moteghayyer (mutable) pitches in a dastgah shift depending on context, and trying to pin them to a single fixed frequency misrepresents how the music actually works. The theory tells you approximately where to put your finger. Your ear, trained by long listening and slow practice, tells you exactly where.
This is the core skill of fretless playing in modal music: not mechanical precision at a fixed point, but informed flexibility — knowing the theoretical position well enough to depart from it intentionally, guided by the melodic logic of the mode you are playing.
