The Dastgah System: An Introduction to Persian Classical Music
The dastgah system is the organizational framework of Persian classical music (musiqi-ye dastgahi). It encompasses twelve interconnected modal systems that together contain hundreds of melodic models, predetermined melodic paths, functional pitch hierarchies, and a vast body of canonical repertoire known as the radif. This article introduces the system as a whole — individual dastgahs are covered in their own articles.
What this system is not
Practice A dastgah is not a scale. This point deserves emphasis at the outset because it is the most common misunderstanding, especially among musicians trained in Western theory. Reducing a dastgah to its scale pitches is like reducing a novel to its alphabet — technically the letters are all there, but the meaning is gone.
A dastgah includes a set of pitches, yes. But it also includes a specific hierarchy among those pitches (which are emphasized, which are resting points, which are mutable), a collection of melodic models (gusheh) that define how those pitches are used, a conventional order in which those models are performed, and characteristic cadential formulas. Two dastgahs can share much of their pitch material and still be entirely distinct modal systems because they differ in melodic behavior, emphasis, and repertoire.
The word dastgah
Attested The word dastgah (Persian: دستگاه) is commonly parsed as "the position (gah) of the hand (dast)" — a reference to hand placement on the neck of a stringed instrument. In everyday Persian it also means "system" or "apparatus." In musical usage, the term carries both senses: it refers to the overall modal-melodic framework and, more specifically, to the initial mode within each framework that establishes the tonal center.
The twelve modal systems
Established Persian classical music is organized into twelve modal systems, collectively referred to as dastgah-ha-ye davazdah-ganeh (the twelve dastgahs). Seven of these are primary dastgahs; five are secondary modes called avaz (آواز, literally "song" or "melody"). This organization was codified in the nineteenth century, principally through the work of the master musician Mirza Abdollah Farahani (1843-1918) during the Qajar period.
The seven primary dastgahs

Established Four of the five avazes derive from Shur — a reflection of Shur's central position in the system. The fifth, Bayat-e Esfahan, derives from Homayun. The remaining five primary dastgahs (Mahur, Segah, Chahargah, Nava, and Rast-Panjgah) have no associated avazes in the standard classification.
The dastgah-avaz relationship
Established An avaz shares its parent dastgah's basic pitch material but differs in which pitches are emphasized, where the melody dwells, and which gusheh (melodic models) define its character. The avaz is not simply a transposition or a subset of the parent — it is a distinct modal identity built from related tonal material.
Attested In performance, avazes often appear as digressions within a performance of the parent dastgah. A musician performing in Shur may move into Dashti or Abu Ata, exploring that avaz's characteristic melodic territory before returning to Shur via a forud (cadential descent). The boundary between dastgah and avaz is thus more fluid in practice than the theoretical classification suggests.
Attested The status of avazes is itself a point of scholarly discussion. Some scholars and musicians treat the avazes as fully independent modal systems, counting twelve equal dastgahs rather than seven-plus-five. Others maintain the hierarchical parent-satellite distinction. Farhat treats them as secondary systems that "orbit" their parent dastgah. In modern Iranian conservatory practice, they are typically taught as distinct modes but with explicit reference to their parent relationships.
The radif: canonical repertoire
Established The radif (ردیف, literally "row" or "sequence") is the canonical body of melodic models that defines Persian classical music. Where Turkish makam theory is built on abstract structural units (cesni, or tetrachords and pentachords), Persian theory is built on the radif — a collection of traditional melodic figures preserved and transmitted across generations. Learning the radif is learning the music itself, not an abstraction of it.
Established The radif organizes its melodic material by dastgah. Within each dastgah, the radif contains a sequence of gusheh — individual melodic models that each have their own character, register, emphasis pitch, and melodic contour. The number of gusheh varies by compilation; Moussa Ma'rufi's published transcription (1963) contains approximately 470 gusheh across all twelve modal systems.
Established Several versions of the radif exist, compiled by different master musicians. The most influential include:
- Mirza Abdollah's radif — transmitted orally and later transcribed by his student Moussa Ma'rufi. Remains the foundational version in contemporary conservatories and universities.
- Abolhasan Saba's radif — another widely studied compilation, reflecting a parallel lineage of transmission.
Attested In 2009, UNESCO inscribed the radif of Iranian music on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, recognizing it as "the oldest documented version of the seven dastgah system."
Attested A crucial point about the radif: since its codification in the nineteenth century, no new dastgah or major gusheh has been added to the canon. Musical development within the tradition proceeds through reinterpretation and borrowing from existing material, not through the invention of new modal systems. The system is, in this sense, remarkably stable.
Key concepts
Gusheh
Established A gusheh (گوشه, literally "corner") is an individual melodic model within the radif. Each gusheh has a characteristic melodic contour, a specific pitch of emphasis (shahed), and a prescribed register. Some gusheh are brief melodic cells; others are extended melodic frameworks for improvisation. A performance in a dastgah is essentially a journey through a selection of that dastgah's gusheh, in a broadly conventional order.
Established Certain gusheh types have specific structural roles:
- Daraamad (درآمد, "entrance") — the introductory gusheh that establishes the dastgah's tonal center and character.
- Forud (فرود, "descent") — a cadential formula that signals a return to the home pitch. Forud patterns recur throughout a performance, providing structural punctuation between sections.
Shahed, ist, and forud
Established Persian dastgah theory identifies several functional pitch roles within each dastgah and its gusheh:

Attested The distinction between shahed and finalis is one of the system's most important features. In Shur, for example, the shahed sits a fifth above the finalis — the melody gravitates toward the shahed but ultimately resolves down to the finalis. This separation of the pitch of emphasis from the pitch of rest creates a characteristic tonal tension that has no direct parallel in Turkish makam theory, where the karar (resting tone) is generally also the primary point of emphasis.
Moteghayyer: mutable pitches
Established Perhaps the most distinctive concept in Persian dastgah theory is moteghayyer (متغیر, "changeable") — pitches that shift their intonation depending on melodic direction, register, or the specific gusheh being performed. A moteghayyer pitch is not ornamented or accidentally inflected; its mutability is a structural feature of the mode.
Established In Shur, the second degree (notated with the koron accidental, approximately a quarter-tone flat) is the primary moteghayyer. Farhat documents that it may be raised in ascending passages and lowered in descending ones. The exact degree of shift depends on context.
Practice This concept requires a fundamental shift in thinking for musicians trained in systems where pitches are fixed positions. In the dastgah system, a "note" is not necessarily a single frequency — it is a region of pitch space that the performer navigates according to musical context. Farhat deliberately provides interval measurements in approximate cents rather than committing to any fixed temperament grid, reflecting this flexibility.
How the dastgah system relates to Turkish makam
Established The dastgah system and the Turkish makam system share deep historical roots in medieval Islamic music theory — the lineage of al-Farabi, Ibn Sina, and Safi al-Din al-Urmawi. But they diverged significantly in the centuries since, reflecting different institutional histories and different approaches to codification.
The key structural differences include:
- Building blocks: Turkish theory constructs makams from abstract interval patterns (cesni). Persian theory organizes modes through the radif's concrete melodic models (gusheh).
- Interval precision: Turkish AEU theory specifies intervals in exact Holdrian commas on a 53-tone grid. Persian theory describes intervals flexibly, with mutable pitches built into the system.
- Modal hierarchy: Persian theory explicitly organizes modes into parent-satellite relationships (dastgah-avaz). Turkish theory treats makams as more independent entities.
