Setar Tuning: Dastgah-Specific Kouk for the Persian Setar
The setar's name means "three strings," yet the modern instrument has four. This small physical fact points to something larger: the setar is an instrument defined by adaptation. Its tunings shift to serve different dastgahs, its moveable frets slide to accommodate different intervals, and its intimate, quiet voice responds to these adjustments with changes in resonant character that shape the modal atmosphere of a performance.
What is kouk?
Established In Persian classical music, kouk (کوک) refers to the tuning of an instrument's open strings — specifically, the intervallic relationships between them. The kouk is not merely a preparatory step before playing; it is an integral part of a dastgah's musical identity. Different dastgahs call for different kouk configurations, and an experienced player chooses a tuning that places the open strings in sympathetic relationship with the mode's most important pitches.
Practice The absolute pitch of the open strings is flexible. Unlike Western concert practice, where A4 = 440 Hz is a fixed reference, Persian musicians tune to suit their voice, their instrument's resonance, or the ensemble. What remains constant are the intervals between strings. When this article gives pitches like C3 or G3, these are conventional reference points, not strict targets.
The four strings
Established The setar's four strings, from the player's perspective (nearest to farthest), are:

Established The bam and mushtaq strings are struck together as a course, sounding an octave apart (C3 + C4). The had string is the primary melody string. The zir, at G3, sits a perfect fourth below the had and a perfect fifth above the bam, providing a secondary resonant pitch.
Attested The mushtaq string is a later addition, commonly attributed to the Sufi musician Moshtaq Ali Shah. Despite the fourth string, players still work with three functional groups — the paired bass course and two individual strings — preserving the instrument's "three-string" identity in practice.
The standard tuning: Do-Sol
Established The most common setar kouk is Do-Sol (C-G), notated C3-C4-G3-C4, or c c' g c' in Helmholtz pitch notation. This tuning places the open strings on the first and fifth scale degrees (do and sol) — the two most stable pitches in most Persian modes.
Established Do-Sol is the default tuning for dastgah Shur and its derivative avaz-ha (Abuata, Dashti, Afshari, Bayat-e Tork). Since Shur is considered the foundational dastgah — the mode taught first and performed most frequently — Do-Sol functions as the setar's home tuning.
Dastgah-specific tunings
Practice Certain dastgahs benefit from retuning one or two strings so that the open strings reinforce different scale degrees. When an open string coincides with a structurally important pitch in the mode — the shahed, the forud target, or a characteristic moteghayyer — the instrument resonates sympathetically whenever that pitch is played on a fretted string. This sympathetic reinforcement deepens the modal color in a way that fret adjustment alone cannot achieve.

Attested In the Do-Sol-Do-Re kouk for Mahur, raising the had string from C4 to D4 places the melody string on re — the finalis of dastgah Mahur. The open course (C3 + C4) and the zir (G3) remain unchanged, providing do and sol as resonant anchors while the melody string now starts from the mode's tonal center.
Attested In the Do-Fa-Do-Do kouk for Chahargah, the zir string drops from G3 to F3. This places it a perfect fourth above the bam (C3), reinforcing fa — a structurally prominent pitch in Chahargah's characteristic tetrachord.
Attested The Do-Sol-Do-Mik kouk for Segah tunes the had string to E koron (Ek4) — approximately a quarter tone below E natural, roughly 45 cents flat of E4. This is the koron inflection that defines the shahed of dastgah Segah. Having this pitch as an open string gives the player a constant drone reference for the mode's most distinctive interval.
Attested The Re-La-Re-Re kouk transposes the standard Do-Sol up a whole tone (D3-D4-A3-D4), preserving the same interval relationships. This is used when a performer wants the open strings at a higher pitch level, often to match a singer's range or to exploit a particular instrument's resonance.
How retuning changes the instrument
Practice The setar is an instrument of sympathetic resonance. Its light construction and thin soundboard mean that open strings vibrate audibly when pitches matching their natural frequency are played on a fretted string. Changing the kouk therefore changes which fretted pitches receive this sympathetic reinforcement — and with it, which scale degrees seem to glow from within the instrument's body.
Practice In the standard Do-Sol tuning, every do (C) and sol (G) played anywhere on the neck causes the open strings to resonate. When the had string is raised to re (D4) for Mahur, the resonance shifts — now every re triggers sympathetic vibration, subtly emphasizing the tonal center of the mode without the player doing anything deliberate. This is what makes dastgah-specific kouk more than a convenience: it recruits the instrument itself as a participant in establishing the modal atmosphere.
Practice This resonant response is part of the setar's distinctive intimacy. The instrument is quiet enough that these secondary vibrations are clearly audible to the player, creating a continuous, gentle reinforcement of the modal framework that louder instruments cannot replicate.
Practical guidance
Practice When changing kouk, retune as few strings as necessary. Most dastgah-specific configurations change only one string from the standard Do-Sol tuning. Excessive retuning destabilizes the instrument's setup and can take time the performance context does not allow.
Practice Retuning and fret adjustment work together. Changing the kouk to suit a dastgah is typically accompanied by repositioning the small number of moveable gut frets that carry the mode's moteghayyer pitches — the koron and sori inflections that distinguish one dastgah from another. The fixed reference frets — the octave, fifth, and fourth — remain in place regardless of which kouk is in use.
Practice Not all performers use dastgah-specific tunings for every mode. Some experienced players work entirely in Do-Sol, relying on fret technique and melodic shaping to establish the modal character. The use of alternative kouk configurations is a practical aid, not an obligation — though the sympathetic resonance benefits are tangible and widely valued among practitioners.
