Moteghayyer: The Mutable Pitches of Persian Classical Music

In Western music, a scale is a fixed sequence of pitches. In Turkish makam, the perdeler are named positions on a 53-tone grid. In Persian classical music, certain pitches within a dastgah are not fixed at all. They shift — deliberately, structurally, as part of the mode's identity. These are the moteghayyer, and they represent one of the most distinctive features of the Persian modal system.

What moteghayyer means

Established Moteghayyer (Persian: متغیّر) means "changeable" or "variable." In the context of dastgah theory, it refers to a specific scale degree that consistently appears at two distinct pitch levels depending on the melodic context. The shift may be governed by melodic direction (ascending vs. descending), by which gusheh is being performed, or by the performer's expressive judgment within the radif framework.

Established Farhat identifies moteghayyer as a formal category in his analysis of each dastgah in The Dastgah Concept in Persian Music. For each dastgah he documents, he specifies which degrees are mutable and describes the contexts in which they shift. This is not a footnote or an edge case — it is central to his account of how Persian modes work.

What moteghayyer is not

Attested Moteghayyer is not ornamentation. Ornamental pitch inflections — trills, grace notes, slides — exist in Persian music as they do in every tradition. Moteghayyer is something different: a structural feature of the mode itself. When a performer shifts a moteghayyer pitch, they are not decorating the melody but expressing a fundamental property of the dastgah.

Attested Moteghayyer is also not chromaticism in the Western sense. Western chromaticism introduces pitches from outside the prevailing scale — a C-sharp appearing in a C-major context. Moteghayyer involves a pitch that is already inside the scale appearing at a different intonation level. The scale does not borrow from elsewhere; it flexes from within.

Attested Nor is moteghayyer equivalent to Western modulation, which shifts the entire tonal center to a new key. When a moteghayyer pitch shifts in Shur, the dastgah remains Shur. The tonal center does not change. A single degree moves, and the rest of the framework holds.

Mutable degrees across the dastgah system

Established Not every dastgah has mutable pitches. Farhat's analysis shows that moteghayyer is concentrated in certain modes, particularly those built on neutral (koron) intervals. The following table summarizes the mutable degrees documented by Farhat:

Attested The five avazes inherit their parent dastgah's mutable pitches. Abu Ata, Bayat-e Tork, Afshari, and Dashti — all derived from Shur — share Shur's mutable 2nd and 6th degrees. Bayat-e Esfahan, derived from Homayun, inherits its mutable 2nd degree.

Practice A pattern emerges: modes built on neutral intervals (those involving koron inflections) tend to have mutable pitches. Mahur, which closely resembles the Western major scale and uses no koron intervals, has none. The mutable degrees cluster around the neutral seconds and neutral sixths that give Persian music its most distinctive color.

Shur: the paradigm case

Established Shur is the most important dastgah and the clearest example of moteghayyer in action. Its primary mutable pitch is the second degree, E koron — a neutral second sitting between the Western minor second and whole tone. Farhat documents that this pitch may be raised when the melody ascends (moving toward a more natural E) and lowered when the melody descends.

Established The sixth degree (la koron) is Shur's other moteghayyer. It undergoes a similar directional shift — raised in ascending passages, lowered in descending ones. Together, these two mutable pitches create a mode that literally changes shape depending on which direction the melody moves. An ascending passage through Shur traces a different set of intervals than a descending one through the same register.

Practice For performers trained in Western or Turkish traditions, this is the most challenging aspect of learning Shur. The "same note" is not always the same pitch. The second degree is a zone that the performer navigates, not a fixed point on a grid. Learning Shur means internalizing when and how much to shift these degrees — a skill absorbed through years of studying the radif, not from reading a tuning chart.

Homayun and Segah: different mutations

Established Homayun shares Shur's lower tetrachord and therefore shares its mutable second degree. But Homayun's upper register is anchored by a large, fixed augmented second between the sixth and seventh degrees (approximately 317 cents). The interaction between the mutable lower half and the rigid upper half creates Homayun's characteristic tension — the scale breathes below and holds firm above.

Attested Segah presents a different kind of mutability. Its moteghayyer is the fifth degree, sitting at approximately 611 cents above the finalis — close to the tritone zone that Western theory treats as maximally unstable. When this pitch is raised, the upper portion of the scale expands outward; when lowered, it contracts. The result is a mode that can open or close its upper register in real time, giving Segah its contemplative, searching quality.

The tuning problem: why fixed pitch fails

Established Moteghayyer explains why Persian classical music has resisted fixed-pitch instruments more than Turkish makam has. A piano cannot produce a mutable second degree. A Western-fretted guitar cannot shift a pitch zone depending on melodic direction.

Established Farhat deliberately provides interval measurements in approximate cents rather than committing to any fixed temperament grid. This is not imprecision — it is accuracy. A temperament grid implies that each pitch has one correct value. Moteghayyer means that certain pitches have two correct values, and the choice between them is part of the music. Farhat's cent-based descriptions respect this reality in a way that a comma-based grid cannot.

Attested This is one of the key differences between the Turkish and Persian theoretical traditions. Turkish theory adopted the 53-comma Holdrian system as its standard measurement framework, assigning each perde a fixed comma value. Persian theory never adopted an equivalent fixed grid. The concept of moteghayyer is a major reason why: a system that treats pitches as variable by definition cannot be faithfully represented by a system that treats them as fixed.

Comparison with Turkish makam

Established Turkish makam theory has no equivalent concept. The perdeler are fixed positions. When a Turkish performer moves from one makam to another, the intervals change because the makam changes — not because individual pitches flex within a single makam. The Turkish system handles modal variety through a large inventory of makams (over 100 named modes), each with a fixed interval structure.

Attested The Persian system handles some of the same expressive territory through fewer modes with more internal flexibility. Where Turkish theory might define two separate makams with slightly different second degrees, Persian theory defines one dastgah whose second degree shifts. The living scale

Practice Moteghayyer reveals something fundamental about the Persian conception of a mode. A dastgah is not a scale in the Western sense — a fixed ladder of pitches that the performer climbs up and down. It is a living structure that responds to melodic context. The performer does not play on the mode; they play within it, navigating pitch zones whose exact positions shift in real time.

Practice During describes the dastgah system as one in which the performer "passes through" a series of modal territories, each with its own center of gravity. Moteghayyer is part of what makes this journey possible — the flexibility of certain pitches allows the mode to accommodate the expressive demands of different gusheh without breaking its identity. The mode bends but does not break.

Practice For musicians approaching this music from outside the tradition, moteghayyer is the concept that most clearly signals a different way of thinking about pitch. Western and Turkish theory both ask: what pitch is this? Persian theory asks: what pitch is this, here, now, moving in this direction? The answer depends on the question's context, and the music lives in that dependence.
