Ear Training for Neutral Intervals
The hardest part of learning makam or dastgah music is not theory. It is hearing the pitches the theory describes. Middle Eastern and Central Asian modal traditions use intervals that sit between the notes of a piano — not sharp, not flat, but somewhere else entirely. A Western-trained ear has spent years learning to ignore exactly these pitches. The good news is that this is a perceptual habit, not a limitation, and it can be retrained.
What neutral intervals are
Established A neutral interval is one that falls between a major and minor interval of the same type. A neutral third, for instance, is wider than a minor third (300 cents in 12-TET) but narrower than a major third (400 cents). A neutral second is wider than a minor second (100 cents) but narrower than a major second (200 cents). These intervals have no keys on a piano and no frets on a standard guitar. They are the pitches that live between the frets — the ones this site is named for.
Established In the Arel-Ezgi-Uzdilek system used in Turkish makam theory, two interval sizes produce these neutral sounds. Both are measured in Holdrian commas (1 comma = 1/53 of an octave, approximately 22.6 cents):

Established These two intervals are the building blocks of the neutral sound in makam. The küçük mücenneb (S) at 5 commas is roughly a quarter tone wider than a Western semitone. The büyük mücenneb (K) at 8 commas is roughly a quarter tone narrower than a Western whole tone. Neither has a close equivalent in any 12-tone system. Both appear throughout the cesni catalog that makams are built from — the Rast cesni (T-K-S) and the Ussak cesni (S-K-T) are defined by them.
Established When these intervals stack, they produce neutral thirds. The Segah perde in Turkish theory sits 17 commas above Rast — approximately 385 cents, between a minor third (about 294 cents at 13 commas) and a major third (about 408 cents at 18 commas). Arabic Rast places its third closer to 350 cents. The exact placement varies between traditions and performers, but the essential quality — not major, not minor, something else — is what your ear needs to learn to hear.
Why Western-trained ears struggle
Attested Research in music cognition has shown that musical training creates what psychologists call categorical perception — listeners sort the continuous range of possible pitches into learned categories and become less sensitive to differences within those categories. Burns and Ward demonstrated this experimentally for melodic intervals in 1978: trained musicians perceive intervals categorically, hearing a pitch as "major third" or "minor third" and resisting the in-between. When a neutral third arrives, a Western-trained ear tries to assign it to a familiar bin. It sounds "out of tune" because the ear is forcing it into a category it does not belong to.
Attested But this is learned, not fixed. Perlman and Krumhansl showed in 1996 that Javanese and Western musicians develop different internal interval standards based on the music they were trained in. Globerson and colleagues found in 2016 that classical Arab-music listeners — whose tradition uses quarter-tone intervals routinely — demonstrate superior pitch discrimination compared to listeners without that exposure. The ear adapts to the intervals it hears regularly. You are not missing a faculty; you are building a new one.
What to listen for
Practice Start with the intervals that define the most common microtonal makams — the ones that separate the "Microtonal" tier in Meshk from the "Common (12-TET)" tier:
- The 8-comma step (K, ~181 cents). This is the büyük mücenneb, and it is the signature sound of Rast and Ussak. It sits almost exactly midway between a semitone and a whole tone. When you hear a pitch that sounds "not quite a whole tone, not quite a semitone," you are hearing an 8-comma step.
- The 5-comma step (S, ~113 cents). The küçük mücenneb. Narrower than the 8-comma step, wider than a standard semitone. It appears at the bottom of the Ussak cesni and at the top of Rast.
- The 12-comma augmented second (A, ~272 cents). This one is dramatic rather than subtle — the wide step that defines the Hicaz cesni. Western ears usually recognize it immediately as "exotic" or "Middle Eastern." The harder exercise is hearing it as exactly 12 commas, not the slightly different augmented second a piano produces.
- The difference between 8 and 9 commas. This is the subtlest distinction: 181 cents versus 204 cents, a gap of roughly 23 cents — just one comma. Yet it is the difference between a neutral and a major second, between the sound of Rast and the sound of Cargah, between a makam that requires a fretless instrument and one playable on a guitar.
Practical exercises
Practice These approaches come from the pedagogical traditions of makam and maqam instruction, not from a single published method. Use whatever combination works for your ear.
Comparison pairs. Play a major second (9 commas), then an 8-comma step, back and forth. In Meshk, load Rast and click between Rast and Dugah (9 commas, a tanini), then between Dugah and Segah (8 commas, a büyük mücenneb). Repeat until you can reliably tell which is wider. Then do the same with the 5-comma küçük mücenneb against a 4-comma bakiye (standard semitone).
Sing the interval. Hear the 8-comma step on your instrument or in Meshk, then try to sing it. Your voice is fretless by nature — it can produce any pitch — but your ear will initially try to pull you toward the nearest semitone or whole tone. The moment you can sing an 8-comma step without drifting to 9 is the moment you have genuinely internalized it.
Drone and target. Sustain the karar (tonic) as a drone and play the neutral degree against it. For Ussak, that means holding Dugah and playing the pitch 5 commas above — the küçük mücenneb that defines the mode's opening gesture. For Rast, hold the karar and reach for Segah, the neutral third. The drone gives your ear a fixed reference; the neutral pitch defines itself against it.
Listen to masters. No exercise replaces extensive listening. Recordings of taksim (improvisation) in Rast or Ussak will expose your ear to how these intervals actually move in context — not as isolated pitches but as part of a seyir, a melodic path with direction and weight. The intervals are not abstract; they exist inside musical phrases, and that is where your ear will ultimately learn them.
The role of cultural immersion
Attested The research is consistent on one point: exposure is the primary driver of interval perception. Listeners who grow up hearing quarter-tone intervals perceive them categorically, the same way Western-trained ears perceive semitones and whole tones. For an adult learner coming from a 12-tone background, the practical equivalent is sustained, deliberate listening — not just exercises, but immersion.
Practice Build a listening habit around the music itself. Turkish classical recordings, Persian radif performances, Arabic taqasim — the style matters less than the consistency. Over weeks and months of regular listening, the neutral intervals stop sounding foreign and start sounding like what they are: specific, nameable pitches with their own character, as distinct from their neighbors as C is from C-sharp. That shift is not instant, but it is reliable, and every hour of attentive listening accelerates it.
