Nava: The Dignified Dastgah

Nava is one of the seven primary Persian dastgahs and among the least frequently performed in the tradition. Its name (نوا, nava) means "melody" or "song" in Persian and also designates a specific pitch position in the traditional tuning system. Despite its relative rarity on the concert stage, Nava occupies a defined place in the twelve-mode system and contains a full complement of gusheh in the radif.

Established Persian musical tradition consistently describes Nava's character as dignified and solemn — neither the melancholy of Shur nor the drama of Chahargah nor the brightness of Mahur, but something more restrained and stately. The combination of a major-second opening with a neutral third gives Nava a color that sits between the warmth of major-mode dastgahs and the introspection of Shur.

Scale structure

Established Farhat describes the basic scale of Nava (presented here with a finalis of C) as approximately:

Established The interval pattern in Holdrian commas is 9-5-8-9-9-4-9, totaling 53 commas per octave. The defining feature of Nava's scale is its opening: a major second (9 commas, ~204 cents) followed by a narrow neutral step of just 5 commas (~113 cents) to the neutral third. This creates a characteristic tonal signature — the ear encounters a firm whole tone first, then a delicate step into the neutral-third territory that is one of Persian music's most distinctive sounds.

Practice Compare this opening to Shur (4-10) and Chahargah (4-10): both begin with a narrow neutral or small second followed by a wide interval. Nava inverts this pattern, starting wide then narrowing. The result is a fundamentally different first impression — where Shur and Chahargah announce their modal identity through an immediate microtonal interval, Nava begins with a familiar major-second sound before revealing its Persian character in the second step.

Attested From the third degree onward, Nava's intervals (8-9-9-4-9 commas) are identical to those of Chahargah. The two dastgahs reach the same neutral-third position (14 commas from the finalis) by different paths and share an identical upper structure. Their contrasting lower seconds — Chahargah's compressed 4-comma opening versus Nava's open 9-comma opening — create entirely different modal identities from the same upper material.

Functional pitches

Attested The functional pitch roles in Nava follow the standard dastgah framework:

  • Finalis (forud target): C — the pitch on which the dastgah rests and concludes.
  • Shahed ("witness"): melodic activity gravitates toward the middle and upper registers of the scale, with the fifth degree (G) serving as an important point of emphasis and return.
  • Forud: the cadential descent follows a stepwise path through the lower portion of the scale, passing through the neutral third (E koron) and major second (D) before resting on the finalis.

Practice The particular quality of Nava's forud — descending through a major second rather than a neutral or small second — gives its cadences a different weight compared to Shur or Chahargah. Where those dastgahs conclude with a characteristically microtonal step, Nava's final descent has a broader, more settled quality.

Moteghayyer: the mutable pitches

Attested Nava's scale includes pitches that are commonly mutable across the Persian system, even though Farhat does not identify Nava's moteghayyer as prominently as Shur's well-documented second degree. The third degree (E koron, the neutral third at ~317 cents) is one of the most characteristically flexible pitches in Persian music, and the seventh degree (B koron at ~996 cents) also exhibits contextual shifting in several dastgahs that use it, Nava included.

Practice The practical implication for performers is that Nava's neutral intervals — particularly the third and seventh degrees — are not fixed points but regions of pitch space. The E koron may be realized somewhat higher in ascending phrases and lower in descending ones, though the degree of mutation in Nava is generally more subtle than the pronounced moteghayyer behavior of Shur's second degree. Farhat's deliberate use of approximate cent values (rather than fixed comma prescriptions) reflects this flexibility across all dastgahs.

Nava in the radif

Established Like all seven primary dastgahs, Nava has its own section within the radif — the canonical body of melodic models (gusheh) that defines Persian classical music. A performance in Nava begins with the daraamad (introductory gusheh) that establishes the mode's character, then proceeds through a selection of gusheh before returning via forud to the finalis.

Attested Bruno Nettl's structural analysis of the radif identified Nava as having extensive overlap with other dastgahs. In his study, Nettl found twelve shared gusheh between Nava and other modes — a number that led him to characterize Nava (along with Rast-Panjgah) as largely a collection of borrowed material from other dastgahs. This analytical observation does not diminish Nava's identity as a distinct dastgah — the same gusheh take on different character when performed within Nava's tonal framework — but it does help explain both Nava's relationship to neighboring modes and its relative rarity in concert performance.

Uncertain The specific gusheh that populate Nava's radif section, and the degree to which they are unique to Nava versus shared with neighboring dastgahs, varies between different radif compilations. The Mirza Abdollah tradition (transcribed by Moussa Ma'rufi) and the Abolhasan Saba tradition contain somewhat different selections. A detailed inventory of Nava's gusheh requires comparison across multiple radif sources, and the scholarly literature on Nava is less extensive than that covering Shur, Chahargah, or Homayun.

The name and Turkish connections

Established The word "nava" carries two senses in Persian musical usage: it is a general word for "melody" or "song," and it designates a specific pitch position in the traditional tuning system — roughly corresponding to the fifth degree above the fundamental tone.

Established In Turkish music theory, the cognate term "neva" (نوا) is a perde name — a named pitch position corresponding approximately to D in the standard reference frame. This shared etymological root reflects the common heritage of both traditions in medieval Islamic music theory, the lineage of al-Farabi, Ibn Sina, and Safi al-Din al-Urmawi.

Attested Despite the shared name, the overlap between Nava as a Persian dastgah and any single Turkish makam is low. The interval structure of Nava shows some surface resemblance to the Turkish Ussak makam — both build a neutral third from a larger second plus a smaller second. But the parallel is limited: Ussak begins with a neutral second (~8 commas) rather than Nava's major second (~9 commas), and the two diverge in the upper register. More fundamentally, Ussak is a single makam with a defined seyir, while Nava is a dastgah containing an entire repertoire of gusheh — comparing the two is comparing a room to a building.

Attested This name divergence — neva as a pitch position in Turkish versus Nava as a complete modal system in Persian — illustrates a broader pattern across the two traditions. Segah, Humayun/Homayun, Rast, and Bayati/Bayat all appear in both systems but designate different structural levels or different modal content, reflecting centuries of parallel development from a shared medieval root.

Why Nava is less frequently performed

Attested Among the seven primary dastgahs, Nava is one of the least frequently performed. Several factors contribute to this status:

Extensive borrowing: Nettl's finding that Nava's radif section consists largely of material shared with other dastgahs means that performers encounter much of Nava's melodic territory through other, more commonly performed modes. A musician performing in Shur or Rast-Panjgah may traverse modal areas that overlap significantly with Nava's own gusheh.

No satellite modes: Unlike Shur (which has four derived avazes) or Homayun (which has Bayat-e Esfahan), Nava has no associated avaz modes in the standard classification. This limits the modal network surrounding it and reduces the occasions on which a performer would naturally modulate into Nava's territory.

Subtlety of character: Nava's dignified but understated character — neither dramatically chromatic nor emotionally immediate — may make it less suited to the concert settings where more distinctive dastgahs tend to predominate. This is a matter of performance fashion, not of musical worth.

Practice Despite its relative rarity, Nava remains a full member of the seven-dastgah system and its presence in the radif is not in question. Students of Persian classical music are expected to learn its radif section, and its inclusion in the canon reflects an aesthetic completeness that the tradition preserves even when performance fashion favors other modes. The dignified, solemn quality of Nava has its own artistic value — a quality of restraint that stands in contrast to the more overtly emotional dastgahs. In a system that values subtlety and depth alongside dramatic expression, Nava's quieter voice has its place.
