Mahur: The Major-Mode Dastgah
Mahur (ماهور) is the bright, celebratory dastgah of Persian classical music — the emotional opposite of Shur. Where Shur conveys passion and plaintive longing, Mahur radiates boldness, gaiety, and optimism. It is the dastgah of festive occasions and weddings, and traditional prescription holds that it is best played after sunset. Among the seven primary dastgahs, Mahur is the one whose pitch content most closely resembles the Western major scale — but as we will see, that resemblance is both illuminating and profoundly misleading.
Scale structure
Established The scale of Mahur follows a pattern of whole tones and semitones that will look familiar to any musician trained in Western theory. Taking C as the finalis:

Established The interval pattern — 9-9-4-9-9-9-4 commas — produces the familiar whole-whole-half-whole-whole-whole-half sequence that defines the major mode across many traditions. But notice the tuning: these intervals are Pythagorean, not equal-tempered. The major thirds (~408 cents) are wider than their equal-tempered equivalents (400 cents), and the semitones (~90 cents) are narrower than the piano's 100-cent half steps. This tuning gives Mahur a brightness and clarity distinct from a piano's major scale.
Practice For musicians coming from Western training, Mahur's pitches may seem like home ground. They are not. The Pythagorean tuning is only the first difference; the deeper ones lie in how those pitches behave — their hierarchy, their mutability, and the melodic conventions that govern their use.
Functional pitches
Established Like all dastgahs, Mahur defines specific functional roles for its pitches:
- Finalis (ist): C — the tonic, the pitch on which the dastgah rests and concludes. All forud patterns resolve here.
- Shahed ("witness"): D — the second degree, prominently emphasized especially in the Daraamad. The shahed is the pitch around which melodic activity gravitates, and in Mahur it sits just one step above the finalis.
- Forud: the cadential descent — a characteristic melodic formula that brings the melody back down to the finalis. Forud patterns punctuate the performance, providing structural return points between gusheh.
Attested The proximity of shahed to finalis in Mahur contrasts with the wider separation found in Shur, where the shahed sits a fifth above. This gives Mahur's melodic motion a different gravitational character — the emphasis and resting points are close neighbors rather than distant poles. The melody's overall range extends approximately a minor tenth above the finalis, and its movement is predominantly stepwise, with ascending and descending thirds common.
The seventh degree
Established The most distinctive melodic feature of Mahur is the behavior of its seventh degree. In ascending passages moving toward the upper octave, the seventh is natural — B at 49 commas (~1110 cents), a major seventh above the finalis. In descending passages from the upper register, the seventh drops to B-flat (~996 cents), a minor seventh.
Attested This directional inflection of the seventh degree is, in the words of the literature, "the fundamental quality of Mahur." It is not optional ornamentation or performer's discretion — it is a defining characteristic of how the dastgah moves. The ascending major seventh pulls upward toward resolution at the octave; the descending minor seventh eases the melody's return downward.
Practice Notably, this seventh-degree behavior is not formally classified as a moteghayyer (mutable pitch) in the way that Shur's second degree is. The meshk.app catalog, following Farhat, lists no formal moteghayyer indices for Mahur. The inflection operates more as an ingrained melodic convention than a theoretically designated mutation — a reminder that dastgah practice does not always fit neatly into theoretical categories.
Mahur and the radif
Established Mahur's section within the radif is the longest of any dastgah, containing thirty-four named gusheh — more than any other modal system in the Persian tradition. This abundance of melodic models gives performers an unusually wide landscape to traverse in a Mahur performance.
Established A performance typically begins with the Moqaddame (introduction), which establishes the mode and mood, followed by the Daraamad (entrance), where the dastgah's tonal center and character come into full focus. From there, the performer selects a path through the available gusheh. Named gusheh in Mahur include Dad, Khosrovani, Tusi, Azerbayjani, Feyli, Abol, Delkash, Neyriz, Shekaste, Nahib, Araq, Ashur, Rak, Rak-e Kashmir, and Rak-e Hendi, among others.
Attested Despite having the most extensive radif section, Mahur is less frequently performed in traditional repertoire than Shur. Its bright, celebratory character makes it the natural choice for festive contexts, but the introspective and emotionally complex world of Shur has historically drawn more sustained attention from performers and audiences in the classical tradition.
Delkash: Mahur's hidden Shur
Established The gusheh called Delkash (meaning "fascinating" or "winsome") is the most important gusheh in Mahur after the Daraamad, and it provides a textbook example of modal modulation in Persian music. In Delkash, the sixth degree takes a koron (A koron — approximately a quarter-tone flat), and the seventh drops to B-flat. The effect is striking: both the mode and the tonic shift.
Established As Farhat observes, a listener who had not heard the opening of a performance of Mahur might think that Delkash was, in fact, Shur. The bright major-mode landscape temporarily gives way to the plaintive, neutral-interval world of Shur's characteristic sound. This is not a brief inflection — it is a genuine modal transformation happening within the framework of a single dastgah performance.
Practice For students of the dastgah system, Delkash demonstrates a principle that applies throughout Persian classical music: a dastgah is not a static scale but a dynamic territory that contains within itself the seeds of other modal identities. The journey through Mahur's gusheh can lead the performer into sound-worlds that seem far removed from the dastgah's opening character, before the forud brings everything back to the bright finality of the home pitch.
More than a major scale
Established Farhat makes a point about Mahur that serves as a powerful pedagogical lesson for the entire dastgah system: "probably no melody in the major mode can be said to be in the mode of Mahur." A Western major-scale melody and a Mahur performance share pitch content but almost nothing else. The major scale is an abstract collection of intervals; Mahur is a living system of melodic models, pitch hierarchies, conventional paths, and expressive possibilities accumulated over centuries of practice.
Practice This distinction matters beyond Mahur. It is a concrete demonstration of the principle introduced in the dastgah system overview: a dastgah is not a scale. Mahur makes the point unavoidable precisely because its scale looks so familiar. The pitches are (approximately) the same ones a pianist plays in C major. But a pianist playing a C major scale is not performing Mahur, any more than someone reciting the alphabet is writing a poem.
Mahur and related systems
Established Mahur's major-mode structure has direct equivalents in neighboring musical traditions. In Turkish makam theory, Cargah makam shares the same interval pattern — it is the direct Turkish counterpart of Mahur. In Arabic maqam theory, the equivalent is Maqam Ajam, a name whose literal meaning ("non-Arab, especially Persian") acknowledges the mode's perceived Persian origin.
Attested A common source of confusion is the relationship between Mahur and Turkish Rast makam. Despite frequent informal comparisons, they are not equivalent. Rast features a neutral third and a neutral seventh — intervals that give it a distinctly different color from Mahur's pure major thirds and sevenths. The Turkish equivalent of Mahur is Cargah, not Rast.
Established Mahur is unique among the seven primary dastgahs in having no associated avaz (satellite modes). Where Shur generates four avazes — Abu Ata, Bayat-e Tork, Afshari, and Dashti — Mahur stands alone. This is not a limitation but a reflection of Mahur's particular character within the system: its modal identity, while rich in internal gusheh, does not branch into the subsidiary modal worlds that characterize dastgahs like Shur and Homayun.
