Segah: The Dastgah of the Neutral Third
Segah is one of the seven primary Persian dastgahs and among the most distinctive in character. Its name comes from the Persian se-gah (سهگاه), meaning "third position" — a reference to the third degree of the pitch system, the neutral interval on which the dastgah rests. Where Shur builds its identity on the neutral second, Segah builds on the neutral third itself as tonal center. The result is a mode often described as contemplative, mystical, and inward-turning — a quality that arises directly from the tonal ambiguity of its resting pitch.
The neutral tonic
Established Segah's finalis sits on the segah degree, a pitch approximately 113 cents above the next lower note in the system. This neutral interval — neither a Western semitone nor a whole tone — gives the dastgah an immediate sense of suspension. The ear trained in Western harmony expects a tonic to be either "major" or "minor"; Segah's tonic is neither. It occupies the space between those categories, and this irreducible ambiguity is the source of the mode's contemplative quality.
Practice For a musician approaching Segah for the first time, the challenge begins at the very first pitch. The tonic itself is microtonal — it demands that the performer commit to a neutral interval as "home" rather than resolving it into a more familiar major or minor frame. This is what the name Between Frets refers to: pitches that exist in the spaces a Western instrument cannot reach.
Scale structure
Attested Farhat describes the basic scale of Segah (finalis on approximately E koron) as follows. The cent values are 53-comma grid approximations of flexible intervals — in practice, performers adjust intonation according to context, as Farhat consistently emphasizes:

Attested The interval sequence 5–8–9–5–8–9–9 reveals a near-symmetric structure: the pattern 5–8–9 repeats twice before a final whole tone completes the octave. This internal symmetry contributes to Segah's sense of balance and repose — the same intervallic cell governs both the lower and upper halves of the scale, with only the closing interval breaking the pattern.
Established The opening interval of 5 commas (~113 cents) is the kucuk mucennep — a small neutral second that immediately signals the microtonal character of the mode. This narrow step from the finalis is Segah's most recognizable sonic signature. It appears again between the fourth and fifth degrees, reinforcing the mode's structural coherence.
Functional pitches
Attested Segah's functional pitch hierarchy operates somewhat differently from Shur's. In Shur, the shahed (pitch of primary emphasis) sits a fifth above the finalis, creating a clear separation between the pitch of emphasis and the pitch of rest. In Segah, the relationship between these roles varies depending on which gusheh is being performed — different gusheh foreground different pitches as points of emphasis.
Attested The forud (cadential descent) returns the melody to the finalis through a characteristic stepwise formula. This descent through the opening small interval (from the second degree down to the finalis) is one of Segah's most recognizable melodic gestures — the narrow step into the neutral tonic creates a cadence that sounds neither fully resolved nor fully suspended.
Moteghayyer: the mutable fifth degree
Attested Segah's primary moteghayyer (mutable pitch) is the fifth degree, sitting at approximately 611 cents above the finalis — close to the tritone of Western theory. This pitch is inherently unstable: too high to function as a comfortable perfect fourth, too low for a perfect fifth. Its mutability — shifting upward or downward depending on melodic direction and expressive intent — is a structural feature of the mode, not an ornamental variation.
Practice The mutable fifth degree is one of the features that gives Segah its characteristic tension. When this pitch is raised, the upper portion of the scale opens outward, creating a sense of expansion; when it descends, the scale contracts, pulling the melody back toward the neutral tonic. Learning to navigate this mutability is central to performing Segah idiomatically — it is not a pitch the performer simply "plays," but one they actively shape in response to the music's direction.
Segah and the radif
Established Like all primary dastgahs, Segah's section within the radif contains a sequence of gusheh (melodic models) that define how the mode unfolds in performance. A performance in Segah follows a broadly conventional path through these gusheh, beginning with the daraamad (introductory section) that establishes the neutral tonic and the mode's contemplative character.
Attested Among Segah's most important gusheh is Zabol, named for the Zabol/Sistan region and representing a substantial modal area within the dastgah. Zabol introduces different interval emphasis and melodic contour while remaining within Segah's tonal world. Farhat's analysis identifies Zabol as one of the gusheh that receives extended treatment in the radif — it functions almost as a mode-within-a-mode, with its own characteristic phrases and cadential patterns.
Attested Another significant section is Mokhalef-e Segah (the "contrasting" section of Segah), which moves the melody into the upper register and introduces substantially different interval material. The Mokhalef creates a moment of heightened intensity and altered color before the eventual forud back to the neutral tonic. This contrast between the intimate lower register and the more expansive upper register is one of Segah's defining structural features.
Attested Muyeh (literally "lamentation") is a gusheh of plaintive, mournful character found in Segah's radif section. Its melodic contour emphasizes the expressive potential of the mutable pitches, drawing out the mode's contemplative qualities to their most intense expression. Muyeh demonstrates how a single dastgah can contain within it a range of emotional registers — from the serene opening daraamad to the raw expressiveness of lamentation.
Segah and Turkish Segah: shared name, divergent traditions
Attested The Turkish makam called Segah shares its name and its tonal center with the Persian dastgah. Both rest on the "third position" pitch — a neutral interval that defies Western major/minor categorization. Both feature an ascending melodic character. And both occupy contemplative, often devotional roles within their respective traditions.
Attested Beyond these shared foundations, the two systems diverge in structure and methodology. The differences illuminate how the same starting pitch can generate distinct musical traditions:

Attested The most immediately audible difference is in the upper register. Turkish Segah introduces a Hicaz tetrachord with its characteristic augmented second (~294 cents), creating dramatic tension in the upper portion of the scale. Persian Segah instead maintains its 5–8–9 intervallic pattern through the upper register, with the Mokhalef section introducing contrast through melodic development rather than a fundamentally different interval structure.
Practice The second and third intervals also swap between traditions: Persian Segah uses 8–9 (a large neutral second followed by a whole tone), while Turkish Segah reverses this to 9–8. The difference is subtle but consequential — it shifts the internal gravity of the scale, placing the wider interval at a different structural point.
Performance contexts
Attested Segah's contemplative character has historically associated it with devotional and mystical contexts in both Persian and Turkish traditions. In the Turkish tradition, Segah is associated with Mevlevi (Sufi) ceremonies and sacred music. Within Persian practice, Segah's inward-turning quality makes it particularly suited to meditative improvisation and the more reflective portions of a concert program.
Attested Unlike Shur, which serves as the parent for four avaz satellite modes, Segah has no associated avazes in the standard twelve-mode classification. It stands as an independent modal system — its contemplative world is self-contained, without the family of derivative modes that extends Shur's tonal territory.
Practice Segah rewards patience. Its beauty emerges not from dramatic contrasts or virtuosic display, but from the subtle inflection of neutral intervals and the gradual unfolding of gusheh through the radif. For a student moving from Shur to Segah, the most important adjustment is learning to inhabit the neutral tonic — to hear it not as an unresolved major or minor third, but as a resting point in its own right. This is one of the deeper lessons of the dastgah tradition: not every tonic needs to fit within the Western categories that a piano imposes.
