Dastgah and Makam: Two Modal Philosophies Compared

Turkish makam and Persian dastgah are often presented as regional variants of the same thing — "Middle Eastern modes." They are not. They share a common ancestor in the medieval Islamic music theory of Safiyüddin and Maraghi, and some of their modal names overlap, but their underlying philosophies about what a mode is, how precisely it should be specified, and how it should be taught have diverged profoundly.

The structural comparison

Established The differences are not matters of detail. They reflect fundamentally different approaches to the same musical problem: how to organize melodic freedom within a recognizable framework.

Pitch: points versus zones

Established The sharpest philosophical difference is in how each system treats pitch. Turkish AEU theory assigns every perde a precise comma value. Perde Segâh is at 17 commas — not approximately 17, not 16-to-18, but 17. The system is deterministic on paper.

Established Persian dastgah theory takes the opposite approach. Farhat's analyses use approximate cent values and explicitly acknowledge that performers produce different values in different contexts. The concept of moteghayyer — a pitch that functions at two distinct levels depending on melodic direction — is not an embarrassing deviation from theory but a formal component of it.

Attested In practice, the gap between the systems is smaller than the theory suggests. Turkish performers deviate from AEU's predicted values routinely — Akkoc and Bozkurt's computational studies have documented this extensively. And Persian performers, despite the theoretical flexibility, do converge on characteristic pitch regions for each dastgah. The difference is whether the theory acknowledges this flexibility or pretends it does not exist.

Melodic identity: seyir versus radif

Attested How does each system define what makes a mode recognizable? Turkish theory answers with seyir — a characteristic melodic path that specifies the general direction of melodic movement (ascending, descending, or both), which register gets emphasis, and where the melody should begin and end. Two makams can share the same scale and be distinguished solely by seyir (Hüseyni vs. Muhayyer is the classic example).

Attested Persian theory answers with the radif — a canonical repertoire of melodic models (gusheh) that collectively define each dastgah's identity. A dastgah is not a scale with a direction; it is a collection of related melodic gestures, hierarchically organized, that a performer navigates. The radif is both a teaching tool and a generative grammar: performers learn it completely, then use it as a framework for creating new melodic journeys.

Practice Both systems achieve the same goal — ensuring that a knowledgeable listener can identify the mode from the melody — but through different mechanisms. Seyir is a rule about direction. The radif is a repertoire of examples.

Modulation: geçki versus gusheh navigation

Attested Turkish makam theory has a well-developed vocabulary for modulation: geçki refers to the movement from one makam to another within a performance. A performer in Rast may modulate to Segâh, then to Hicaz, before returning to Rast. Each modulation involves a recognizable shift in the intervallic framework.

Attested Persian dastgah handles modal variety differently. Within a single dastgah performance, the performer moves through multiple gusheh — each with its own pitch emphasis, melodic character, and sometimes its own pitch alterations. This is not modulation in the Turkish sense (moving to a different named mode) but navigation within a hierarchical structure. The gusheh are all "inside" the dastgah.

Practice The practical result is similar — both traditions produce performances with multiple modal colors — but the conceptual framework is different. Turkish theory describes it as leaving home and returning. Persian theory describes it as exploring different rooms in the same house.

Notation: precision versus honesty

Attested Turkish AEU notation uses ten microtonal accidentals — five types of sharp and five types of flat, each representing a specific number of Holdrian commas. This gives the notation high precision: a written score specifies the intended pitch within approximately 23 cents.

Attested Persian notation uses only two microtonal accidentals — koron (approximately quarter-tone flat) and sori (approximately quarter-tone sharp). This gives less precision but arguably more honestly represents what performers do: aim for a pitch zone, not a specific frequency.

Practice The notation philosophies mirror the tuning philosophies. AEU notation implies that pitch can and should be fixed; koron/sori notation implies that pitch is inherently approximate. Both are useful; neither fully captures performance practice.

Historical connections

Attested The two systems are not unrelated traditions that happen to be similar. They share a direct historical connection through the medieval Islamic theoretical tradition:

  • Safiyüddin al-Urmawi (13th century) produced treatises cited by both Ottoman and Persian theorists
  • Abdülkadir Maraghi (15th century) worked at both Ottoman and Timurid courts, transmitting ideas across the cultural boundary
  • Ottoman-Safavid cultural exchange continued through the 16th–18th centuries despite political rivalry

Attested The shared modal names — Rast, Segâh, Neva/Nava, Irak, Hüseyni/Homayun — are direct evidence of this inheritance. But the names now refer to different (though related) musical entities in each tradition.

What each tradition can learn from the other

Practice For students coming from one tradition to the other:

  • From makam to dastgah: expect less theoretical precision and more melodic freedom. The absence of a rigid comma grid is not vagueness — it is a different kind of specificity, focused on melodic behavior rather than intervallic measurement.

  • From dastgah to makam: expect more theoretical apparatus and less improvisatory freedom within composed forms. The comma grid is not rigidity — it is a pedagogical tool that gives students concrete targets while they develop the ear that will eventually transcend those targets.

  • Both traditions agree on what matters most: the ear, trained through years of practice with masters, is the final authority. Theory is scaffolding. The music is what remains when the scaffolding comes down.
