The Qanun: A Mechanical Solution to Microtonality

The qanun is a large trapezoidal zither — plucked, not struck — whose defining innovation is a set of small metal levers that give the player on-the-fly control over microtonal pitch. Where the oud leaves intonation to the ear and the tanbur maps it onto frets, the qanun solves the problem mechanically. Each lever click shortens or lengthens a string by a precise fraction, letting the performer switch between makam or maqam mid-phrase without retuning. It is the dominant melodic instrument in both Turkish and Arabic classical ensembles.

Name and origins

Established The name qanun (Turkish: kanun) derives from the Ancient Greek kanon (canonn), meaning "rule" or "law." In Greek antiquity, the kanon was a monochord — a single-string measuring device used to demonstrate acoustic ratios. The semantic link is fitting: the qanun, with its many strings and precise lever system, functions as a kind of physical rulebook for the pitch system it serves.

Attested Stringed instruments with a trapezoidal form have been traced to ancient Mesopotamia. A carved ivory artefact found at Nimrud, the Assyrian capital, depicts what appears to be a zither-like instrument, though the direct connection between such ancient depictions and the modern qanun is debated by scholars. The trapezoidal zither form has deep roots in the region, but claiming a continuous lineage from Assyrian instruments to the Ottoman qanun requires more evidence than currently available.

Uncertain Many popular sources state that al-Farabi (d. 950) described the qanun in his Kitab al-Musiqi al-Kabir (Grand Book of Music). Al-Farabi's treatise discusses instruments in detail — the oud, the tunbur, and others — but the specific claim that he described a multi-string trapezoidal zither under the name qanun could not be confirmed in the sources consulted for this article. The "al-Farabi invented the qanun" claim, which appears frequently online, should be treated with particular caution: it is exactly the kind of confident, unsourced assertion that proliferates around Middle Eastern music topics.

Established By the Ottoman period, the qanun was a well-established instrument in court music ensembles, and it has remained central to both Turkish classical and Arabic art music traditions since.

Construction

Established The qanun has a flat, trapezoidal body — wider at the bass end, tapering toward the treble. A Turkish kanun typically measures 95 to 100 cm in length, 38 to 40 cm in width at the broadest point, and only 4 to 6 cm in height. Arabic instruments are slightly larger. The body is shallow compared to its footprint; the instrument is essentially a large, thin resonating board with a frame around it.

Established The soundboard is typically spruce, with ornamental sound holes called kafes that contribute to the instrument's timbre. Beneath the strings, a series of animal-skin insets (traditionally fish skin) support a long bridge running nearly the full width of the instrument. Turkish qanuns use four skin insets; Arabic instruments typically use five, each supporting the bridge on an arching pillar. These skin membranes act as secondary resonators, giving the qanun its characteristic bright, ringing sustain.

Established The strings are nylon or PVF (fluorocarbon), arranged in 26 courses of three strings each — 78 strings in total. Each course is tuned in unison, producing the shimmering, chorused quality that makes the qanun immediately recognizable. The strings attach to wooden tuning pegs along the left side of the instrument and run across the bridge to hitch pins on the right.

The mandal lever system

Established The qanun's most distinctive feature is the mandal system — small metal levers fitted beneath each course of strings, near the tuning-peg end. Each mandal, when raised or lowered, presses against the strings to shorten or lengthen the vibrating portion by a small, precise amount. This alters the pitch of the entire course — typically by a fraction of a semitone.

Established A single course may have multiple mandals, each adding a different pitch increment. By combining mandals, the player can reach the specific microtonal intervals required by the makam or maqam being performed. The mandal is not an ornament; it is the mechanism that makes the qanun viable as a microtonal instrument. Without it, the player would need to retune dozens of strings every time the modal framework changed.

Attested The mandal system was not always part of the qanun. According to the Turkish musicologist Rauf Yekta, writing in 1922, mandal technology had been implemented on the kanun approximately thirty years earlier — placing its adoption around the 1890s. Before mandals, qanun players apparently managed pitch adjustments by pressing the string against the frame or simply accepting a more limited palette of available pitches.

Attested The number of divisions per semitone varies by tradition. Turkish kanuns typically divide each semitone into six equal parts, yielding 72 divisions per octave — a system closely related to, though not identical with, the Holdrian comma framework. Arabic qanuns use quarter-tone mandals. Armenian instruments employ equidistant half-tone levers. The mandal configuration physically encodes the tuning system.

Playing technique

Established The qanun is played flat, either resting on the player's lap or on a low trestle. The player sits behind the instrument with the bass strings nearest and the treble strings farthest away. Both hands pluck simultaneously: the right hand plays melody and ornamentation in the upper register, while the left hand provides bass notes and fills. Each index finger wears a small plectrum — traditionally of tortoiseshell, now often plastic — held in place by a metal ring.

Established The standard range spans approximately three and a half octaves, from A2 to E6 in Turkish instruments. Arabic qanuns may extend the range downward to F2 and upward to G6.

Practice Mandal changes are made on the fly, usually by the left hand, while the right hand continues to play. An experienced qanun player executing a modulation will flip several mandals in rapid sequence between phrases — a physical skill that takes years to develop. The faint metallic click of mandals engaging is sometimes audible in quiet passages, a characteristic sound that qanun players accept as part of the instrument's voice.

"The piano of the Middle East"

Practice The qanun is sometimes called "the piano of the Middle East" — a comparison that captures something real but misleads in important ways. Like a piano, the qanun offers a wide range, polyphonic capability, and a fixed pitch grid (set by the mandals rather than by hammers and strings). It often plays a similar ensemble role: providing harmonic grounding and filling out the texture.

But the comparison breaks down at microtonality. A piano divides the octave into twelve equal semitones. A Turkish kanun, with its mandal system, can access 72 divisions per octave. The qanun does not approximate the piano's equal temperament — it implements a fundamentally different, and far more granular, pitch system. Calling it a piano flattens the very feature that makes it musically distinctive.

The qanun in ensemble music

Established In Turkish classical music, the qanun is a core instrument of the fasil ensemble alongside the tanbur, oud, ney (reed flute), kemence (bowed fiddle), and percussion. The qanun typically carries the melodic line and fills the harmonic texture, functioning as both a melodic and an accompanying voice. Its brightness and volume make it the most audible instrument in many ensemble settings.

Established In Arabic art music, the qanun holds an equally central position in the takht ensemble — the traditional small chamber group — and in larger firqa orchestras. Across both traditions, the qanun player often leads the ensemble, setting the intonation that other instruments follow.

Practice Because the qanun's mandals lock in specific pitches, the qanun player's mandal settings effectively define the tuning standard for the entire ensemble. Other instrumentalists — especially fretless players on oud and ney — adjust their intonation to match the qanun. This gives the qanun player an outsized influence on ensemble pitch, a responsibility that requires deep knowledge of the modal system being performed.
