Saba Makamı: The Mode That Breaks the System
Most Turkish makams are built by joining tetrachords and pentachords that each span a perfect fourth or fifth. Saba is the makam that refuses to cooperate. Its lower unit spans noticeably less than a perfect fourth, its scale skips the perde neva entirely, and theorists cannot agree on whether to call its foundation a tetrachord or a trichord. For a student who has internalized the neat cesni-based construction logic of Rast and Ussak, Saba is the first serious encounter with a makam that breaks the model.
Why Saba challenges the system
Established In standard Turkish makam theory, scales are assembled from cesni — tetrachords (dortlu) spanning 22 Holdrian commas (a perfect fourth) and pentachords (besli) spanning 31 commas (a perfect fifth). A dortlu plus a besli, or vice versa, fills the 53-comma octave. This framework accounts for the vast majority of makams. Saba is the conspicuous exception.
Established Saba's lower unit contains three intervals that are all smaller than a whole tone, so that the fourth pitch sits at roughly 18 commas above the karar — four commas (approximately 90 cents, nearly a Western semitone) below the perfect fourth that every other dortlu reaches. The Turkish makam article on Wikipedia notes that trichords "exist, e.g. Saba, but are rarely used," acknowledging that the lower unit does not behave like a standard dortlu. Turkish conservatory pedagogy nevertheless calls it the Saba dortlusu, preserving the tetrachord label even though the span is irregular.
Attested The Arel-Ezgi-Uzdilek (AEU) system — the standard theoretical framework for Turkish makam — has been specifically called out for falling short of correctly representing Saba. Alternative tuning proposals, including Ozan Yarman's 79-tone system, have been motivated in part by Saba's resistance to clean notation within the 24-note AEU grid.
The Saba dortlusu
Established The lower region of Saba is built from three small intervals above the karar (dugah):
- First interval: S (kucuk mucennep) = 5 commas — identical to the first interval of the Ussak dortlu, producing the same neutral second that has no Western equivalent.
- Second interval: K (buyuk mucennep) = 8 commas — again matching Ussak, arriving at the cargah perde.
- Third interval: S (kucuk mucennep) = 5 commas — and here Saba diverges. Where the Ussak dortlu completes with a tanini (T = 9 commas) to reach the perfect fourth at neva, Saba instead takes a small 5-comma step to the Hicaz perde region, stopping well short.
Established The resulting Saba dortlusu — with intervals S + K + S = 5 + 8 + 5 = 18 commas — spans roughly 407 cents. Compare this with a standard dortlu's 22 commas (approximately 498 cents, a perfect fourth). The difference of about 90 cents is close to a Western semitone, making it dramatically and audibly shorter than any other dortlu in the system.
Practice Some theorists describe the Saba lower region as a trichord (uclu) of only three notes (dugah, the neutral second, cargah) with the fourth pitch belonging to the junction with the upper cesni rather than to the lower unit. Others retain the four-note tetrachord description despite the irregular span. This disagreement is not merely terminological — it reflects genuine uncertainty about how Saba fits within the cesni construction model that governs every other standard makam.
Scale in Holdrian commas
Established Saba's ascending scale from the karar (dugah), expressed in Holdrian commas. The upper register is built from a Hicaz besli (pentachord) seated on the guclu (cargah), producing the characteristic augmented second of the Hicaz family:

Established The ascending intervals in commas are approximately: 5 - 8 - 5 - 13 - 4 - 9 - 9. The augmented second between degrees 4 and 5 (approximately 13 commas) is the hallmark Hicaz sound — and it leaps directly over the perde neva, the perfect fourth above dugah that serves as guclu in most dugah-karar makams. Saba's scale simply does not include neva as a scale degree.
Attested The fifth degree does not land precisely on a named AEU perde when derived strictly from cesni intervals (the theoretical position is approximately 30 commas, while the named huseyni perde sits at 31). This 1-comma discrepancy between cesni-derived values and the AEU perde grid is one of the documented ways Saba resists clean theoretical representation.
Functional pitches
Established Saba's functional pitch assignments differ from most dugah-karar makams:
- Karar (resting tone): Dugah — where phrases and the piece conclude, as in Ussak and its relatives.
- Guclu (strong tone): Cargah — the third degree, only 13 commas above the karar. In most makams the guclu sits a fourth or fifth above the karar; Saba's guclu is much closer, reflecting the compressed lower register.
- Yeden (leading tone): Rast — a whole tone below dugah, pulling upward toward the karar in cadential phrases.
Attested The proximity of the guclu to the karar creates a narrow melodic space in the lower register that gives Saba its characteristic tension. There is very little room to move between the two anchor points, and the neutral second between them must do most of the expressive work.
Mutable pitches
Attested Saba contains at least two pitches whose intonation shifts depending on melodic direction and expressive context:

The second degree (neutral second above dugah) behaves exactly as in Ussak — its theoretical position at 5 commas (approximately 113 cents) does not match measured performance, which clusters lower, typically in the 140-160 cent range according to pitch-measurement studies.

The fourth degree (Hicaz region) is described in Turkish sources as being "played somewhat sharper than notated" in ascending passages. The precise intonation depends on whether the performer is moving toward the upper Hicaz territory or descending back toward the guclu.
Practice These flexible pitches are not defects of notation — they are the performance reality that the AEU system approximates but cannot fully capture. As with Ussak's defining second degree, Saba's mutable pitches are best learned by ear against a drone rather than from theoretical comma values alone.
Seyir: the melodic path
Established Saba's seyir is cikici (ascending). The characteristic melodic path unfolds as follows:
- Begin at or near the karar (dugah), establishing the mode through the Saba dortlusu's distinctive sound.
- Ascend through the compressed lower register, dwelling on the neutral second and pausing at the guclu (cargah).
- Continue upward into the Hicaz besli territory — the augmented second between degrees 4 and 5 is a dramatic melodic event, leaping into the upper register.
- Explore the upper pitches (huseyni through gerdaniye).
- Descend back through the guclu, and cadence on the karar using the Saba dortlusu's characteristic intervals.
Practice In a taksim in Saba, the guclu (cargah) functions as a critical structural waypoint. A performer typically suspends on cargah before committing to the upper register and returns to it on the way down. The final descent from cargah to dugah — through the neutral second — is where Saba's emotional character is most concentrated.
Emotional character and etymology
Established The Arabic word saba (صبا) means "yearning" and also refers to the east wind or morning breeze. Turkish sources often connect the makam name to sabah ("morning"), noting that the morning call to prayer was traditionally performed in Saba — though this connection may be folk etymology rather than established derivation.
Practice Saba is consistently described across both Turkish and Arabic traditions as evoking melancholy, longing, spiritual contemplation, and sorrow. The compressed lower register, with its three small intervals crowded together, creates a sense of constriction and unresolved tension that performers exploit for emotional depth. Of all the standard makams, Saba is among the most strongly associated with grief and devotional intensity.
Common modulations
Attested Saba's upper register is built from Hicaz-family intervals, making modulation to Hicaz and Zirguleli Hicaz natural and common. The seyir frequently passes through Hicaz territory when exploring the upper register.
Practice Other common modulations from Saba include:
- Ussak — the shared lower-register material (the neutral second above dugah) makes temporary shifts into Ussak territory possible, especially during descent.
- Hicaz — accessible through the Hicaz besli that forms the upper half of the scale.
- Kurdi — occasionally touched during cadential passages approaching the karar from below.
The classification debate
Established Turkish conservatory pedagogy classifies Saba as a compound (murekkep/bilesik) makam with its karar on dugah. It is not grouped among the simple (basit) makams, partly because its lower unit resists standard cesni categorization.
Attested The scholarly debate around Saba's classification has several dimensions. First, as noted above, theorists disagree on whether the lower unit is a tetrachord or a trichord. Second, the AEU system's 24-note octave division cannot precisely notate Saba's pitches — the fourth and fifth degrees fall between the system's available positions. Third, historical analysis suggests that makam Saba has evolved over centuries: research into early Ottoman musical sources identifies at least two distinct historical forms of Saba, an archaic type and a modern type, whose interval structures differ.
Established In the Arabic tradition, Jins Saba is recognized as unusual among standard ajnas: it is the only jins on which just one maqam is built, and it does not serve as a secondary jins in other maqamat. This isolation reinforces the sense that Saba occupies a unique structural position in both Turkish and Arabic modal theory — a mode that every tradition recognizes and performs, but that no theoretical framework fully accounts for.
