Çârgâh Makamı: The Major Scale of Turkish Theory
Çârgâh is the scale that needs no accidentals. In the Arel-Ezgi-Uzdilek (AEU) system that underlies modern Turkish music theory, Çârgâh occupies the position that C major holds in Western music: the reference point from which all other scales are measured. Its name comes from Persian chahâr-gâh ("fourth position"), indicating its tonic's placement at the fourth degree above Yegâh, the lowest named pitch in the traditional perde system.
Why Çârgâh is the theoretical starting point
Established Hüseyin Sadettin Arel, co-architect of the AEU system in the early twentieth century, designated Çârgâh as the fundamental scale of Turkish music theory. The reasoning was practical: when the AEU staff notation places natural (unmodified) notes on the lines and spaces, the result is the Çârgâh scale. Every other makam requires at least one accidental. This makes Çârgâh the obvious pedagogical anchor --- the scale a student encounters first when learning to read Turkish notation.
Attested This designation is not without controversy. Owen Wright's 1990 study, "Çârgâh in Turkish Classical Music: History versus Theory," examined the gap between Çârgâh's modern theoretical prominence and its historically marginal status. Before Arel's reforms, Çârgâh was not treated as a foundational reference scale. Its elevation to that role was a deliberate act of systematization, modeled on Western tonal theory's treatment of C major.
Interval structure
Established Çârgâh is a purely Pythagorean scale. Its intervals consist entirely of tanini (whole tones, T = 9 Holdrian commas) and bakiye (diatonic semitones, B = 4 commas) --- no microtonal intervals appear. This is what Özkan means when he calls it tamamen bir Pisagor dizisi (a complete Pythagorean series) and doğal bir dizi (a natural scale).

Established The pattern T--T--B--T--T--T--B (9+9+4+9+9+9+4 = 53 commas) is immediately recognizable as the major scale. Because the AEU system divides the octave into 53 Holdrian commas, and because Çârgâh uses only the two simplest interval types, the scale is exactly playable in 12-tone equal temperament --- the only simple makam for which this is true.
Çeşni: pentachord and tetrachord
Established Çârgâh is built from two namesake building blocks:
- Çârgâh beşlisi (pentachord): T--T--B--T = 9+9+4+9 = 31 commas, spanning a perfect fifth from the karar upward. This is the lower half of the scale.
- Çârgâh dörtlüsü (tetrachord): T--T--B = 9+9+4 = 22 commas, spanning a perfect fourth from Gerdâniye to Tiz Çârgâh. This is the upper half.
Established Pentachord plus tetrachord: 31 + 22 = 53 commas, one full octave. The two units join at Gerdâniye (the fifth degree), which serves as the güçlü. The Çârgâh çeşni is one of the six foundational tetrachord/pentachord types in the AEU framework, alongside Rast, Büselik, Kürdî, Uşşak, and Hicaz.
Functional pitches
Established The three functional pitches of Çârgâh:
- Karar (tonic/finalis): Çârgâh perde, 22 commas above Rast. This is where phrases resolve and the scale comes to rest.
- Güçlü (dominant): Gerdâniye, a perfect fifth above the karar, at the junction between pentachord and tetrachord. Phrases pause here in asma karar (suspended cadence) before the final descent.
- Yeden (leading tone): Bûselik, one bakiye (4 commas) below the tonic, creating the expected half-step pull toward resolution.
Seyir: the melodic path
Established Çârgâh is classified as çıkıcı (ascending) in its seyir. The characteristic melodic progression moves upward from the tonic through the pentachord, establishes the güçlü, continues into the upper tetrachord, then descends to resolve.
Attested Özkan and the EKSD (Esendere Kültür ve Sanat Derneği) describe a typical seyir in four stages:
- Begin near the karar (Çârgâh), establishing the lower register with the pentachord pitches.
- Ascend through the Çârgâh pentachord to the güçlü (Gerdâniye), pausing there with an asma karar.
- Continue upward through the Çârgâh tetrachord into the tiz (high) register.
- Descend back through the güçlü, move through the pentachord, and resolve on the karar.
Established During the seyir, modulations to Hicaz and Nikriz are common. Showing a Hicaz dörtlüsü on the Çârgâh pitch has become a customary inflection --- Özkan notes it as an established practice (âdet olmuştur). The Nikriz geçki adds chromatic tension before the return to the natural Çârgâh intervals.
Theory versus practice
Established Despite its theoretical centrality, Çârgâh is strikingly rare in the classical repertoire. Özkan states plainly that Çârgâh Türk halk mûsikîsinde kullanıldığı halde klâsik mûsikîde pek kullanılmamıştır --- it is used in folk music but rarely in classical music. The known classical compositions in Çârgâh are few, mostly religious works: ilâhîs and Mevlevî âyîn compositions. Notable peşrevs include those by Nayi Osman Dede (seventeenth--eighteenth century) and Mustafa Kevserî Dede Efendi.
Attested Turkish Wikipedia records that in the eighteenth century, Çârgâh ugursuz sayıldığı için (was considered inauspicious), which contributed to its falling out of use. Özkan also observes that many works historically labeled as Çârgâh actually employed a Zirküle-i Hicaz scale on the Çârgâh pitch, not the pure major-scale pattern. The modern understanding of Çârgâh as a straightforward major scale reflects Arel's twentieth-century systematization more than Ottoman practice.
Practice This scarcity is itself instructive. A student might assume that the simplest, most "natural" scale would dominate the repertoire --- but in Turkish art music, the neutral intervals of Rast and the expressive microtonal inflections of Uşşak, Hüseynî, and Hicaz have always been preferred. The major scale's familiarity is, in a sense, its limitation: it lacks the pitch ambiguity and melodic tension that give Turkish classical music its character.
Cognates: Mahur, Ajam, and the Chahârgâh confusion
Established Three important cross-tradition relationships deserve careful distinction:
Mahur makamı shares Çârgâh's interval structure exactly --- T--T--B--T--T--T--B --- but transposes the tonic down to the Rast pitch. Despite identical intervals, Mahur is a separate makam with a descending (inici) seyir, a far richer repertoire (over 800 known compositions), and its own melodic identity. Mahur has been in continuous use for centuries; Çârgâh's revival is modern.
Attested Arabic Ajam (also spelled 'Ajam) is the cognate in the Arabic maqam tradition. Built on the Arabic Jahârkâh pitch --- itself a cognate of Chahârgâh --- Ajam mirrors the major-scale structure. The three traditions' versions share an intervallic skeleton but differ in melodic behavior, pitch hierarchy, and intonation nuance.
Established Persian Chahârgâh is a false cognate despite sharing the etymological root. Persian Chahârgâh dastgâh is a chromatic mode with augmented seconds, closer in character to Turkish Hicaz than to Turkish Çârgâh. The actual Persian cognate of the major scale is Mâhur dastgâh, which broadly parallels the major mode but imposes its own gusheh structures, forud patterns, and moteghayyer behavior. Farhat's analysis emphasizes that no Western major-scale melody would qualify as Mâhur performance.
Practice For the student, Çârgâh's value is precisely its transparency. Because it maps onto a pattern Western-trained ears already know, it lets a beginner focus on the AEU notation system, the perde names, and the concept of seyir without simultaneously wrestling with unfamiliar intervals. Once those foundations are solid, the student moves on to Rast, Uşşak, and the makams where the real expressive work begins.
