Turkish Makam

Makam Acem Kürdî

Intermediate

Acem Kürdî places the Kürdî minor character at the Acem perde, producing a makam with familiar minor-mode intervals in a register that gives them a deeper, more grounded quality.

Structure

Attested Acem Kürdî combines:

  • Lower çeşni: Kürdî tetrachord on Acem
  • Upper çeşni: Buselik pentachord
  • Karar: Acem (Acemaşiran perde)
  • Güçlü: Neva
  • Seyir: Çıkıcı (ascending)

Attested The Kürdî tetrachord — with its minor second at the bottom (the half-step that distinguishes Kürdî from Uşşak) — gives Acem Kürdî a clearly minor character. The Buselik pentachord above continues the minor orientation, creating an unambiguously melancholic mood.

Relationship to other minor makams

Practice Turkish theory contains several makams with minor-mode character — Kürdî, Nihavend, Buselik, Acem Kürdî — each distinguished by karar position, çeşni combination, and seyir direction. Acem Kürdî occupies a specific niche: the Kürdî minor character placed low enough in the register to feel grounded and stable, with an ascending seyir that opens the mood upward despite the minor intervals.

Repertoire and usage

Attested Acem Kürdî has a solid if not extensive repertoire. Its clear minor character and stable structure make it a relatively accessible makam for students who have already studied Kürdî and Nihavend.

Practice The makam is sometimes used as a modulation target from related makams — a performer in Nihavend might pass through Acem Kürdî territory during a geçki, exploiting the shared minor vocabulary.
