A Microtonal Ear Training Curriculum
Hearing microtonal intervals is a skill, not a talent. Research in psychoacoustics confirms that interval perception is built through exposure and training, not inherited. This curriculum provides a structured path from 12-TET hearing to the microtonal fluency that makam and dastgah performance demands.
Prerequisite: basic interval recognition
Practice Before starting microtonal training, you should be able to hear and identify standard Western intervals — at minimum, major and minor seconds, major and minor thirds, perfect fourths and fifths. If you cannot yet hear a minor third versus a major third, start there. Microtonal training builds on top of Western interval categories, not instead of them.
Level 1: The neutral second
Practice The neutral second — roughly 150 cents, sitting between a semitone (100 cents) and a whole tone (200 cents) — is the gateway interval. It is the sound that most immediately distinguishes Middle Eastern modal music from Western tonality.
Exercises:
- Listen to Rast. Find a recording of Makam Rast or Dastgah-e Mahur. Focus on the interval between the second and third degrees — that is the neutral second.
- Compare three intervals. On your instrument (or using Meshk), play a minor second, a neutral second, and a major second in sequence. Repeat until you can hear the neutral second as a distinct sound, not as an out-of-tune version of the other two.
- Sing the neutral second. Try to produce it vocally. Check against a reference. Accuracy will be poor at first — that is normal.
Goal: Be able to hear a neutral second and identify it as neither a semitone nor a whole tone, but something in between.
Level 2: Uşşak versus Rast
Practice Once you can hear the neutral second, the next distinction is between different sizes of neutral second. This is the difference between Uşşak (approximately 7 commas, ~159 cents) and Rast (approximately 8 commas, ~182 cents).
Exercises:
- Compare the two. Play an Uşşak tetrachord and a Rast pentachord back to back. The Uşşak second degree is lower than the Rast second degree.
- Listen in context. Find recordings of pieces in Makam Uşşak and Makam Rast. Focus on the second degree. Over time, you will hear the two as distinct.
- Spend weeks, not minutes. This distinction is subtle (about 23 cents). Expect it to take several weeks of daily practice before it becomes reliable.
Goal: Hear Uşşak and Rast second degrees as different categories, not as the same interval.
Level 3: The augmented second
Practice The augmented second — the signature interval of Hicaz — is wider than a whole tone (roughly 12 commas, ~272 cents). It is dramatic and immediately recognizable.
Exercises:
- Learn the Hicaz tetrachord. Its interval pattern — semitone, augmented second, semitone — is instantly distinctive. Hear the augmented second as a single interval, not as two steps.
- Compare Hicaz with minor. A Hicaz tetrachord and a Kürdî tetrachord share the same starting and ending pitches but differ in internal intervals. Hear how the augmented second transforms the character.
Goal: Identify a Hicaz tetrachord by ear immediately.
Level 4: Segâh and the neutral third
Practice The neutral third — between a minor third (300 cents) and a major third (400 cents) — is the interval that defines the Segâh family. At approximately 17 commas (~385 cents), it sits closer to a major third but with a distinct quality.
Exercises:
- Compare three thirds. Play a minor third, a Segâh third, and a major third in sequence.
- Listen to Makam Segâh recordings. Focus on the opening interval from karar. The slightly low third is the defining sound.
Goal: Hear the neutral third as its own category.
Level 5: Moteghayyer and context-dependent pitch
Practice The most advanced ear training challenge: hearing a pitch that changes depending on melodic context. In dastgah music, moteghayyer pitches function at different frequencies depending on whether the melody is ascending or descending.
Exercises:
- Study one dastgah's moteghayyer. In Shur, the E koron shifts higher when ascending and lower when descending. Listen for this in recordings.
- Practice producing both positions. On your instrument, play the ascending and descending forms and notice the difference.
Goal: Hear moteghayyer as an intentional feature, not as inconsistent intonation.
General principles
Practice Throughout this curriculum:
- Immersion over drills. Listen to recordings daily, not just during practice sessions.
- Sing before you play. Vocal production engages deeper processing than instrumental production.
- Accept confusion. The period when intervals sound ambiguous is the period when new categories are forming.
- Use recordings as reference, not tuners. Match the sound, not the number.
- Be patient. Psychoacoustic research shows that categorical boundaries take weeks to months to stabilize.
